Ban on guns in parks is repealed – North Platte Nebraska’s Newspaper: News: np_city_council,.

With no discussion beforehand, the North Platte City Council moved to repeal a ban on firearms in city parks.

The council voted 6-2 at their regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday at City Hall to repeal it.

The controversial issue was first brought forth by a number of citizens, concerned with signs banning conceal and carry in city parks, which appeared in the spring.

Originally, the group of citizens asked the council to amend the 1975 ordinance to allow concealed carry in parks. However, at the Aug. 7 city council meeting, Council Member James Carman suggested repealing the ordinance altogether, and allowing state laws to be used.

“We’re tickled,” said Tom Kelsey, one citizen who supported the repeal. “[The result] was better than we thought.”

Council members Carman, Tim Barrett, Jerry Stoll, Michelle McNea, Martin Steinbeck and Larry Campbell voted for the measure and Judy Pederson and Dan McGuire voted against it.
