Did/does Hornady make steel cased ammo?
« on: October 29, 2013, 04:16:09 PM »
I found what appears to be steel 9mm Luger cases mixed in with my brass.  I have never purchased Hornady ammo.  Anyone know if they did/do make steel cased ammo?

Thanks,
Fly

Yes, a couple years ago they started making a steel case product to keep costs down.

Doh!  I guess I could have easily researched that.

Of course my next question is, how badly will my dies be screwed up if I don't catch all these little devils?

Has anyone inadvertently attempted to run one of these through their press?

I bought a bunch a brass from another member here, and there were steel cases from Hornady in there.  I cleaned them and sized them with no issues, just haven't loaded them yet.  Probably have about 30 or 40 sitting in the bin.

Hornady's web page description of their steel cased ammo says: "Utilizing coated steel cartridge cases, and non-corrosive berdan primers..."

You won't be able to decap berdan primed cases with conventional dies intended for boxer primers.  :(

"Team Hornady" had this ammunition about 4-5 years ago at the 5.11 Match in Columbus.  It had not been released yet.  They'd brought it to demo.   Nice clean shooting stuff.  What intrigues me is the price point is the same as brass, so I am not sure what the "advantage" of it is .....

Huh...These are just regular boxer primed cases.

Roger that, and that's what I gathered from your post.  Your info was news to me, obviously, since I didn't even know they made any steel cased ammo.  I wouldn't put it past myself to miss the two holes for the berdan, so your info made me go check to see if I missed that detail.

It's all good info and very much appreciated.

Thanks Ghost,

Trust me fly, the first time you try deprime a Berdan you will know.  I turned with one in a brass case last summer, and that pin just doesn't fit in the two flash holes very well
