Guns & Ammo mag ANTI 2A article
« on: November 02, 2013, 04:44:34 PM »
In the Guns and Ammo December issue (received mine yesterday) Technical Editor Dick Metcalf has an opinion piece discussing the merit of 'regulating' guns. Disgusting and foolish. I ordered 24 issues about a year ago because it was so cheap- cancelled it today. I hope this results in the end of Metcalf's career.

Thanks for the link.  I had seen the uproar about the article before, but hadn't searched for their FB page.

Here's what I posted:
Like many others, I am disgusted with Dick Metcalf's article regarding regulating people's right to self-defense---and I appalled that any magazine purporting to support the gun culture would print it.

As many other people have said----I used to support your magazine and I will no longer do so.  And probably more importantly from your point of view, I will let your advertisers know that buying space in your magazine is equivalent to supporting gun control (which, apparently,  you do), and that it will negatively affect their companies if they do so.

If you plan to keep selling anything to gun owners---I suggest you stop supporting gun control.  Until that point in time, feel free to make certain that each of your writers (particularly Dick Metcalf) gets 16 hours of certified government training on how and what to write, so they can exercise their right to free speech.

Since, after all, your magazine seems to believe that sort of thing can be required before exercising a right.

...I strongly suggest that everyone either post to the FB page, or send them an email saying something similar, in particular making sure to let them know that you are writing their advertisers also.

They're really getting drilled on their fb page. It'll be interesting to see what happens.

Response from Jim Bequette, Editor of Guns & Ammo Magazine:

http://d2444os31gbwts.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Screen-Shot-2013-11-06-at-6.07.55-PM.png
I hope this letter is real.  However, I am unable to find any links to stories about this response from Jim Bequette.  The link for the letter is odd at best.  There are a lot of goofballs who would make a letter like this just because.  I will wait until it shows up in an official Guns & Ammo link before I believe it.

If it is true, maybe Dick will have a future with the Brady bunch...

Yeah...saw it there too, but still waiting to see something directly from G&A, instead of a middle man.  I'm just a skeptical person by nature.  ;D

I haven't read Guns & Ammo for decades and hadn't heard about the Metcalf dustup.  I went looking for his article:
http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Lets-Talk-Limits-by-Dick-Metcalf-of-Guns-Ammo-December-2013.pdf

Wow!   Talk about betrayal.   With friends like  that who needs enemies?

I was reading the comments after the apology was issued and noticed other people writing what I was also thinking. In his apology he says that read it and chose to put it in because he thought it would spark a good dialogue. So, Dick Metcalf writes that horrible piece of trash, Jim OK's it and puts it in, G&A gets a huge back lash with long time readers cancelling their subscriptions in droves and then Dick gets fired... Nowhere in there does Jim get any consequences for not saying, "Ya know, Dick, I know you mean well with this article, but your arguments are just flat wrong and won't do anything to foster a healthy debate. Instead they'll sink this magazine so I'm not going to publish this crap."

It seemed like a good apology, but Jim Ok'd what Dick wrote and only Dick got fired...
"Well-regulated" meant well equipped, trained and disciplined... not controlled with an iron fist.
