Competition shooting is just like defensive training...
« on: September 16, 2013, 06:31:25 AM »
I didn't write this one!  (So it might be worth reading.)  Please make sure you read the article BEFORE you comment, otherwise you might completely miss the point...and then people will make fun of you.

A very apt comment:
Eh, I think it’s just a strawman sales tactic. It’s way for tactical trainer dudes to say-without-saying: “If you’re looking for somewhere to spend your limited funds, spend it with us, not with them.”

My favorite comment:

Quote
....

Let's grossly over estimate and assume this works out to about one million semi-active shooter-competitor-trainees/trainers-whatever. There are 80 million gun owners and 40 million handgun owners in the U.S.

Competition vs. tactical isn't the problem. Getting tens of millions of gun owners involved in something - anything - is.

I'm one of the 40 million and am trying to fit in a time to do either one of those.
"Well-regulated" meant well equipped, trained and disciplined... not controlled with an iron fist.

One of the best quotes I've ever heard regarding this, even though I can't remember who it was from:

"I know a lot of gun owners, but I know very few shooters."

I like the competition.  It beats standing in a lane, punching holes in a madly dancing target (hat tip to sfg), while other shooters hot brass comes flying in your face, or worse   :)

I hear you.  Even though I'm by no means a top competitor I like it because it gives me something to measure my progress by.

Again, I look at competition as a means of "stress inoculation."   It's also a reasonably good yardstick with which to measure progress.
"It is better to avoid than to run; better to run than to de-escalate; better to de-escalate than to fight; better to fight than to die. The very essence of self-defense is a thin list of things that might get you out alive when you are already screwed." – Rory Miller

Sorry...I'm kind of late to this party, but I just saw this thread.

In my opinion, competition SHOULD be more like the real thing.  Combat rolls, oral knife carry techniques, one-blow disabling chops to the neck, and all the other serious operator techniques should be incorporated into the matches. If you can do this stuff, you aint just Sumdood.

All the tactical knowledge you need to know:

"It is better to avoid than to run; better to run than to de-escalate; better to de-escalate than to fight; better to fight than to die. The very essence of self-defense is a thin list of things that might get you out alive when you are already screwed." – Rory Miller

After we all become proficient shooters we can worry about the important things.....like taming bald eagles and how to kill a man with just one punch.

If we only had Chuck Norris on the forum.  He could teach us how to kill a man with just a look.
