"USPSA is about speed, and IDPA is about accuracy..."

(1/4) > >>

.....no.  Just, no.

It is amazing how many people keep saying that---and I just don't see it.  In both sports, you have a situation in which poor accuracy is penalized, and speed is necessary to win.  The argument SEEMS to be that the penalty for poor accuracy is much more significant in IDPA than in USPSA.  And yet...

I ran the stats from the last couple of IDPA matches, comparing scores had it been scored by USPSA rules versus IDPA rules, and oddly enough, it didn't work out that way.

I can come up with circumstances where it seems that IDPA penalizes accuracy more, and others where USPSA penalizes accuracy more.  ( Oddly enough, USPSA penalizes misses and no-shoot hits MUCH more harshly all the time, which is odd since it is IDPA that considers itself the more "realistic, tactical" sport.)

Anyway---I wrote it up a bit more clearly on the PRT blog:

Thoughts?

(I know, I know, most people don't care.  I'm still annoyed when people make sweeping statements that aren't necessarily true.)

C'mon, those USPSA shooting jerseys are as bad as garish Hawaiian shirts.

The sedate, clean lines of an IDPA vest are simply more elegant.

I don't think either game penalizes misses and poor hits enough.

Only hits change the fight.  Of course, the faster you can achieve those hits, the better.

I've shot IDPA a long time.  I decided a couple of years ago that I will never be Bob Vogel.  That being said, I determined my goal at ANY match was to try and shoot it clean.  Speed will come (and even then I am not gunning to win the world).   For the most part I can go "down zero" or pretty close, to it.  Due to lots of practice, I can also do fairly well with time so usually place in the top 5 in most low tier matches.  That being said, I am not and never will be, competitive with guys like jthapkido due to his overall speed.  As an example, our first IDPA match 2014, he was well 10 seconds faster than me, but many more points down due to "accuracy"(all due respect because even then he's not bad).  I've never shot USPSA, so don't have a clue on how I'd do there.  I do know in 3 guns back in the 5.11 matches of yesteryear in Columbus I was competitive, but not even close to Dennis Kirchoff who was both fast and accurate.  A wise friend of all of us, one Chris Zeeb, summed it for me this way.... "If you're shooting perfect for accuracy you're shooting to slow".  In short, there's a balance somewhere....his name was mentioned above....Bob Vogel.... :)
