IDPA Feb 2014 match plus gear question/answer...
(1/1)
JTH:
I'm not the IDPA Nebraska guy (or one of the guys) but I thought I'd mention it...
Monthly IDPA match at Thunder Alley in Lincoln this Saturday, February 1st! Registration starts at 7:15, stage briefing at 7:45 (I think!) with shooting starting at 8am. Only $10 for two stages.
Main reason I'm posting: A number of people have asked me what type of gear they need for IDPA (which means that I know the IDPA Nebraska folks have been asked a ton of times more since I'm not an IDPA match guy) and the answer is: Not much.
Matter of fact, Blade-Tech (who I am not in any way affiliated with) has a great combo pack for people who want to start in IDPA.

One holster (suitable for IDPA), one double-mag pouch, and a training barrel because you should dryfire practice at home. For the SSP and ESP divisions, that (along with a concealment garment, 3 mags, and ammo) is all you need to play the game. (For CDP you'll need another mag pouch, and for revolver you'll need moon clip or speedloader pouches, obviously.)
Sure, there are better mag pouches out there. And probably better holsters. But those combo packs are perfectly decent equipment, for an excellent price. (Best prices I've actually seen are on OpticsPlanet at http://www.opticsplanet.com/blade-tech-revolution-combo-pack.html ) Generally, just a HOLSTER will cost you more than that.
If you are a lefty, you may be out of luck, and have to buy the equipment separately. For right-handed folks, though, it's a good deal.
....and you can also use the gear in USPSA, too. ;D
For USPSA, if you are in Production or L-10 you'll probably want one more double-mag pouch. In Limited, though, that gear will do just fine for you.
So---no one gets to use "but I don't want to have to buy a bunch of equipment" as an excuse to not shoot USPSA or IDPA. Either you already have a decent holster and mag pouches, or you SHOULD if you are a shooter, and there you go, all in one combo pack.
