Nebraska Concealed Carry

(1/2) > >>

skoro:
My adult son recently moved to Nebraska and I'm wondering if any of you Huskers can give me brief overview of concealed carry there. Is it a "shall issue" state? Are there courses required for applying for a permit and are they regularly scheduled and easily attended?

Thanks!

I have a S&W 38 snub I'm planning to give him.

OnTheFly:
My bad.  Not "Will", but "Shall" issue.  Assuming he is of age and without a felony record, all he has to do is attend a day course, and pay the fee for the permit.  Several people offer the course, so I don't think it will be difficult to find one.

As far as class availability, it would help to know what part of Nebraska he is living in.

Rich B:
Nebraska is shall-issue and are issued at the state level through the state patrol.  Here is the link to the NSP's website on it: http://www.nsp.state.ne.us/findfile.asp?id2=252.

A course, about 8-10 hours long, is required to obtain your permit.  The course is mostly classroom time, along with a written and practical/target shooting portion.  Most classes seem to run $100-$150 in cost.  You also have to pay $100 to the NSP for the processing fee.  Many instructors also provide instruction for FL and UT permits which are handy if you ever plan to travel out of state.  Once you pass the class, you must go to a state patrol office to be fingerprinted.

If you are east of Kearney, and particularly in the Lincoln or Omaha areas, you shouldn't have much trouble finding a class.  Three instructors I can recommend are Chris Zeeb, Paul Horvick, and Devon Crinklaw.  All three are well qualified but bring their own unique perspective.

Our sister site, www.ccwne.com, is a bit more focused on CCW, but all of your questions should be able to be answered here.

Thanks for the info, guys. He'll be living in the SE part of the state, probably Auburn or Nebraska City, so he'll be fairly close to Omaha and Lincoln.

OnTheFly:
Omaha has...

The Bullet Hole (http://www.thebh.com/)

Lincoln has...

Nebraska CCW Training (http://www.neccwtraining.com/).  This one is run in part by one of the NFOA regulars, Chris Zeeb.

Seasons Choice (http://seasonschoiceonline.com/html/nebraska__ccw_classes.html)

I'm sure there are others.
