Lower Kits?
« on: March 09, 2014, 12:37:07 PM »
I only recently even considered building an AR after seeing someone here posting their build recently.  Since that time my interest has grown.

Am i looking in the wrong places or is it true these lower kits are all sold out, or 8-12 mos. out on wait for new customers?

Thought matbe if i could get a good lower kit, i could spend time researching out the rest as i go, but looking like even getting started might be along wait.

Have you looked at Palmetto State Armory?

http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/ar-15-05/lower-parts/parts-kits.html

For a little up charge, you could probably talk to them and change out some of the items (such as grip) for any different brand/model than is offered in the kit.

So those are essentially the handle and the trigger parts, still needed the lower assembly housing?

Going to have to dig deeper into your website from a device other than my ipad.

Thanks for the link.

To be clear, http://www.matrixaero.com/firearms/ is NOT MY website, it is the website of the manufacturer of the lowers I carry

You have the lower receiverwhich is the part that has to go through an FFL.

And then the lower parts kit.

You should be able to find both easily these days.

ar15.com is a great resource and there are step by step instructions on how to build (along with pictures!)
It's not that hard and pretty fun.  You can build an AR pretty cheaply with used parts.  It is really fun.

^^
Thanks.  I came to that understanding a while ago that i would have to have the FFL for the receiver.

I was skimming an article on a build from the new rifleman website, and for what ever reason i had made the assumption that in his demonstration build that, it had all come in a kit, i guess that's what i was expecting to see when i went about my search.

Think i'm at least on the right track in my quest, like I had thought, i have a lot to learn i suppose, yet, that's all the fun too.

Thanks again.

This is Tinker Toys for adults.  Very addictive and fun.  AR15.com (a.k.a. ARFCOM) as stated above is a good source, though in my opinion, a considerably less civil forum than this one.  Google and/or YouTube for "AR-15 assembly" and you will find a plethora of information.

Here's the best instructions I've found on building a lower:

As Fly said, Arfcom can be a little rough, but the technical forums are pretty good.  It's mainly the non-gun General forums that get stupid.  Entertaining sometimes, but stupid.

I agree with fly and bkoenig. Stick to the tech forums and read read read. Google is also a great tool. The like is to a page on ar15 for builf it yourself threads from assembly to milling your own lower. It is a good place to start.

Watch Palmetto State Armory for their lower build kits to go on sale http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/ar-15-05/lower-parts/build-kits.html.
They have sales about every week.
I have several lower build kits and found them to be of very good quality.

You will still have to pick up a stripped lower.

I have this book http://www.amazon.com/Build-Your-Own-AR-15-Rifle/dp/1452830290/ and used it to put together the stripped lowers.

There were all kinds of lowers and parts kits at the Hastings Gun Show this weekend.  So supply must be loosening up.  Good luck.

The BH had 3 lowers in their display on friday.  I didn't look at them beyond seeing them sitting there as i walked past the gun displays.

Anyhow, as an update, i'm in the waiting process now.  I'm pretty confident i have most essential parts ordered, including some tools.  Waiting to find a float rail i'm interested in, some sights, and magazines.  As soon as everything arrives and i can find some time i'll be good to start building.
