Finally Finished my Build

...after a lot of tinkering this thing together, a piece here and there, over the past couple months. 

So, having never shot an AR before, my only question now is, how do i know it's safe??

I did buy a go/no go gauge, and with no experience and some youtube videos, i'm under the assumption that it passed the test, and, as much as i can tell, the gun functions properly otherwise (still need to buy ammo).

Anyhow, at the end of the day, it seemed to be way to easy to assemble, and with all the purchases to get all the parts, it really seems like nothing actually went into it (when it was done, i sat and thought, that's it?).

I lost, or didn't buy a crush washer for my compensator, so i have that to reinstall, but i'm ready to shoot.

So, here is my build list.

nice build.  yes they are easy.

how do you know its safe?  if everything is in spec and your go gauge says its good, then you should be GTG.  if you're still nervous about shooting it, have a friend fire the first rounds.   

is there anything that you are particularly nervous about?

well, i just don't want it to go boom in my face. 

i'm of the impression that you're not supposed to dry fire it.  with zero experience, it seems to work, don't know if it cycles rounds, kind of worried a round wont be in battery when i pull the trigger. 

just general paranoia of my first time.

pull the charge handle and let it rip i guess....

There's no way to know if it's safe until you fire it.  You should just give it to me to keep yourself from harm.

tell you what, buy some drinks get a grill out put some burgers on that grill, tell the rest of the NFOA where you'll be and we'll take turns shooting it, drinking your drinks and eating your burgers.
After all that you should be able ot know if its safe.

or take it to the bullet hole and ask the guy next to you if he wants to shoot it

You can dry fire a AR as long as you have the upper and a bolt in it. You used quality parts and you checked with your gages. Take it out put one round in and let it fly. If that works put two in. If that works load a full mag and have fun.

Well, i have the lower receiver sitting on my bench, so it's a start.  the plan is for a 20" barrel this time.

with the help from BK, i have built a few lowers and several uppers.  i have never headspaced anything and i still have my face and fingers.  you might be over thinking it a bit, but its always great to be cautious, especially the first time out.  i am very cautious with a new build, especially with a suppressor that is under the handguard.

I have not headspacedd any of the builds I have taken part of either. The first one I did I called around looking for a smith that could check it quick for me and everyone said use quality parts and your g2g if you use junk parts throw them away and buy quality stuff.

AR barrels have the headspace set from the factory.  It's controlled by the barrel extension.  So in theory there's nothing you can do that would cause it to be out of spec on headspace.  If the barrel extension was correctly installed from the factory it should be good to go.

I've found even though I'm afflicted by that BRD that there is a way to keep it from taking over your life. Its not always an easy treatment, but its effective, its called Wife and kids.
