that seems pretty easy.  do you have any pictures of the the base with the pen installed?  is the pen just pinched in place?

Just slip it in and make sure it rides free.  Amazingly it does not slip around or fall out of place.

Add in different barrel lengths would be a variable I don't know how to account for.. right?

Yeah barrel length matters a ton. I know rob likes to hunt quietly with short firearms so that really mucks up any basaltic chart that is ever posted on a box of ammo.
