Hello, everyone,

I'm new to the forum and this group.  I turned in my CCW application about a week ago and now I'm just waiting...

In the meantime I'm looking into self-defense insurance.  I've looked at USCCA, CCW Safe, Second Call and a couple of others.  (I haven't been able to find anything about this in the forum, so please point me in the right direction if this post doesn't belong here.)

What do you recommend for self-defense insurance?  I have googled the major companies and I've examined comparisons of their service online, but some of the information seems like it might be a couple of years old.  I really want to get something, but I want to know what is best.  Right now I'm leaning toward CCW Safe, but they all seem to have their pros and cons.

Any thoughts?

Take a look at ACLDN (Armed Citizens Legal Defense Network).   I'll let you do the research, but they should at least be in the comparison between the many options that are out there.

Agreed.  I really like the continuing education aspect of ACLDN.  Monthly newsletter and then an annual DVD or book.  When I joined I got all of the DVDs they'd done in previous years.

I've had Second Call Defense for a year or so and have been happy with it, though thank God I haven't needed it so I can't say what it's like if you do need it.  The information in the news letters they send out seems to be good and useful; they're really big on not giving the police any more information than what's essential (i.e., I was in fear for my life and acted lawfully in self defense; I will cooperate fully with you when my lawyer gets here).  I like the idea of having a 24 hour legal hotline I can call.  I have no knowledge of the other ones you mention.

++++ 1 ACLDN ... I've been a member since 2010.  Keep in mind it is NOT insurance.  I would encourage you to call Gila Hayes and visit with her.  She is VERY helpful and can explain details regarding ACDLN and what it involves.  One other thing of note.  The BoD and expert witnesses (who would testify on your behalf at no cost) include Mas Ayoob, John Farnham, Dennis Tueller, Marty Hayes (kind of recognize those names? ) Unsure who the insurance companies would have as expert witnesses ....

I think that I am going to sign up for the Armed Citizens Defense League myself...  I paid for one year of coverage through Patriot Legal Protection which was one of the best ones that I could find a year ago.    https://patriotlegalprotection.com/sign-up/

They now only offer up to $3,000 (i am sure it was more) immediate bond money if you are arrested.  They also cover all of your lawyer fees for Both civil & criminal court as well as wage reimbursement if you go to trial.  If you read the details, it does say that you must use one of the approved attorneys & I never requested a list from them but I will if I renew. 

The Armed Citizens Defense League says that they will issue you a $10,000 grant (of sorts) to immediately begin your legal defense & they will decide if your case merits additional defense funding.  They also have 'in network' attorneys but it doesn't sound like you are required to use their guy.  I am on the fence but I think that I will let the Patriot coverage lapse & sign up for this... 

Another thing....the most advertised coverage is by USCCA & from what I understand it works as a reimbursement so you better have money under the mattress if you go that route.

I do feel fortunate to live in an area where the prosecutors don't seem at all hell bent on going after armed citizens who defend themselves...earlier this week Don Kleine announced that he wouldn't file charges on a guy who shot an unarmed man who it sounds like was getting ready to beat the guy after he smashed his car windshield in...

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone.

ACLDN does look pretty good.  The big thing I'm worried about when choosing a company is whether or not you get bail bond money and legal fees up front or whether you just get reimbursed.  Some information online suggests that some companies just reimburse you, but it looks like this may have changed since some of the comparisons were written.  It does appear that ACLDN gives you money up front according to their web site (although a comparison chart on a competitor's page casts doubt on this.  The same chart says ACLDN does not pay for expert witnesses, but their web site seems to say they do.)

I also like ACLDN because it covers self-defense situations that don't involve a firearm.

What about civil liability coverage?  It does not seem to me that ACLDN covers that.

I have the coverage from USCCA and I don't think it is reimbursed coverage, but I will check.
