NFOA Day at the Legislature - Nice to Stand out
Range Mom:
Thinking about my experience at NFOA day, I couldn't help but keep coming back to a comment, nicely said, but still said, as I was getting some information from the Information Desk in the Unicameral. Standing there, with my business suit on, proudly displaying my NFOA button on my lapel, I hear "You don't look like a typical gun owner" They were smiling as they said it, and more likely were focusing on me being all dressed up, and maybe they thought about the fact that I was a woman. Either way, or any way really, I am not sure what they meant other than they, in their minds, had a definition of what a gun owner looked liked and I didn't fit that mold. At first it was kind of upsetting, but then I realized it was an opportunity. So I smiled and said, "Oh, I understand. You see, most women carry concealed. You don't notice us and that's on purpose, but actually, I am quite typical for a gun owner." I thanked them for the directions and hoped they had a great day.
Our voices as Nebraska citizens, our voices as gun owners...it is SO easy to be heard! The way our legislative system in Nebraska is run allows a voice of the people to be heard and counted, far easier than other states I have lived in. I hope that next year, the number of women and men who can make it to NFOA day double, and double again the year after. It was outstanding to have the support we had this year and I know it made a significant difference.
