"A More Perfect Union" by Ben Carson
(1/1)
Mntnman:
Quote from the book:
Quote "Rather than trying to control or confiscate guns it might be smarter to offer free public gun safety courses. In countries like Switzerland where everyman within a certain age range is required to possess a gun and to know how to use it, Switzerland has one of the lowest gun homicide rates in the world. It is clear that guns do not kill people by themselves. Rather people who are determined to kill will find whatever means are available to accomplish their mission."
The countries where people were disarmed - China, USSR, Cuba, Cambodia, Turkey and let's not forget Germany in the late 1930's - soon after the confiscation of all weapons these governments murdered millions of innocent people who had no way to defend themselves.

This is from On the Issues, so how big is a "city"? 10,000 people, 5,000? Will the next be townships?
I like him, except for his stance on this.

Semi-automatic weapons ok in countryside, but not cities
Appearing on Glenn Beck's radio show this past week, Carson took a vastly different stance from most conservatives on the issue of gun control, claiming you shouldn't be able to own semi-automatic weapons in large cities.
Asked by Beck for his thoughts on the Second Amendment, Carson gave the popular pro-gun argument: "There's a reason for the Second Amendment; people do have the right to have weapons."
But when asked whether people should be allowed to own "semi-automatic weapons," the doctor replied: "It depends on where you live. I think if you live in the midst of a lot of people, and I'm afraid that that semi-automatic weapon is going to fall into the hands of a crazy person, I would rather you not have it," Carson elaborated. However, if you live "out in the country somewhere by yourself" and want to own a semi-automatic weapon, he added, "I've no problem with that."

Mntnman:
Don't let yourself be tripped up by that. Ben Carson is the only candidate that weighs his decisions by the Constitution, that can get elected.
His words there, from 2013, were just speaking out of his terrible experience of what guns can do to people. He is probably the best candidate for the protection of gun rights in a very long time.

I think Carson is a good and decent man and I do think he has the right instincts on most issues- if not the most developed policies. I still don't think he's ready for the Presidency. Vast improvement over the current occupant? Of course, although that is setting the bar very low. If he's nominated I'll vote for him and donate money to him because the alternative is unthinkable, but he's not my first or even second choice.
