Home invasion in Columbus
(1/1)
RobertH:
I didn't see this news story posted anywhere else on the forum, so here it is. a son and father fought off 3 attackers in Columbus.
good thing they survived, but i probably wouldn't have shot at their vehicle as the attackers fled. one wrong bullet and you could be in a world of hurt if it hit someone or their property.

Not to mention the fact that once you are no longer in jeopardy, you're supposed to kinda, sorta cease fire and otherwise disengage. Following them out of the house, where you're safe, shooting at an obviously retreating foe, could be construed in some folks' mind as ESCALATION.
It would in mine anyway.

True, but I will hardly fault these guys for not thinking clearly in the heat of the moment if that event transpired exactly as described in the article. Sounds like one hell of a fight.
depserv:
My take on it is that the threat of the homeowner having a gun was all it took to terminate the assault; if the homeowner had been a liberal nitwit there's no telling how far it might have gone.
Going out and shooting at a fleeing vehicle to "mark" it is not a good idea, as has been pointed out. One less obvious reason is what if the attackers had kidnapped someone and they were in the trunk; how would you like to have shot that victim full of holes? Being aware of your background includes being aware that you don't know what's in the trunk.
Under different circumstances assailants who appear to be running away might actually just be moving to a better position to continue their assault from, or maybe running to their car to get a weapon. Once the car is speeding away though it's a pretty safe bet the fight's over (unless and until they come back).

I don't disagree. I totally get that from a legal and "tactical" perspective. I'm just saying I'm personally going to cut the guys some slack after waking up to a butt kicking at 2:30 am with guys attacking him with a hammer and a bag full of rocks. (They apparently learned how to burgle homes by watching Looney Toons episodes?)
