Broken S&W firing pin
(1/1)
Burkdoggy:
I need to replace the hammer mounted firing pin on a Smith & Wesson M10. Just wondering if the hammer needs to come off or can I do the job with the gun intact. If it’s a gunsmith job, who is a good Omaha area person to do the work?
Thanks in advance.

S&W Model 10 Firing Pin Repair
Not sure here if firing pin setups vary from -dash to -dash in Model 10s.
Mine has a simple roll pin holding the hammer-mounted firing pin in place.
Appears that you need:
>New Firing Pin
>New Roll Pin (or most likely can re-use existing pin)
>Small punch to drive out Old Roll Pin
>Small plastic hammer/maybe your plastic bullet puller, if you reload ammo
Then it should be a very simple set of tasks to:
>mount the hammer of the gun against a solid wood block,
>drive out the old roll pin,
>remove the old (broken) firing pin,
>clean out the area as need with a pipe cleaner,
>set in the new firing pin
>align the holes,
>insert and tap in the roll pin,
>check it all out
load and test shoot.
Alternatively, you could send it to the factory, but this repair seems very straightforward and simple, such that A Caveman Could Do It.

*My default option is most often to send my guns back to the factory for repair, since good local gunsmithing is usually hard to find.
Factory is usually quicker, and they have the parts and knowledge about their own guns. Just call factory customer service; EZ from there.

Actually, it seems to be a bushing rather than a roll pin and it needs to be smashed in place a little. I’m going to give it a try myself once the pin and the bushing get here. YouTube showed me how, I just don’t want to remove the side plate to do the job.

It appears that the Model 10 varies from -dash to -dash.
And that the end of your fastener needs to be staked.
And that you have some guidance from YouTube, the Do-It-Yourselfers Best Friend.
May it go well, both for you and for One of the Best .38Cal. Revolvers Ever Made.
