As of 3-30-10 permit holders number 7,368 statewide, according to the State Patrol.

Another tidbit from Douglas County, 2,105 people have passed the criminal background check and gun proficiency requirements to have a concealed-carry permit.

I am disappointed the number is so low, that is less then 1/2 of 1% of the state population (obviously not all of whom are eligible, but still). I would have guessed it would be 10x that amount by now. :(

In my opinion, the top 5 reasons for this are:

1) Expensive to get the required training and the permit.

2) Too many hoops to jump through compared to other states.

3) Some don't want to be on a "list".

4) Most people believe the police will protect them from any harm.

5) Some just take their chances and carry under the "affirmative defense" statute.

With the current makeup of the Unicam and the resistance to passing a castle doctrine law, I don't think the first 2 reasons will change in the near future.  :-\

Texas (2008 #'s) 315,000 out of 24,800,000 = 1.27%
Florida 600,000 out of 18,500,000 = 3.24%
Virginia 214,000 out of 7,800,000 = 2.74%
Nebraska 7400 out of 1,800,000 = .41%

So we are way behind per capita, but then again we are still pretty new to the program.

Nebraskans are practical sorts.  If Farmer Bob thinks he needs to carry his gun, he's going to carry his gun.  His neighbors probably won't even ask why.  Open carry is perfectly legal, so why would Farmer Bob need a CCW permit?

For people in towns and cities, does the cost outweigh the benefit?   For most  the answer is "probably not." and they made it expensive enough that people are going to get one on a casual whim.  With a couple notable exceptions Nebraska is a pretty safe places, so it doesn't surprise me that there's not a surge in people arming themselves.

I think that now that the weather is getting better it will help.
a friend of mine just went in Monday to get fingerprinted, etc and the state patrol CID person told him that they were getting a lot busier with them.

Now how do I convince these 7,000 plus permit holders that it is in their best interest to pursue advanced training? Preferably with me  ;)

Those are interesting stats, thanks for posting them. Of course you're right, along with some other reasons posted, Neb is new to CCW. Florida for instance has had it in place for over 20yrs. I hope it continues to grow and the regs are vastly improved/relaxed to the point a significant % of the population is carrying.

Yes but compared to WI & IL, we are way ahead.  There is always a brighter side. ;-)

I am actually encouraged by these numbers.  In a state where crime is not all that big an issue, or where the militia has not taken hold, to have that large a percentage of folks willing to go through the expense and time to get a CCW is amazing.  You get outside of Omaha or Lincoln and the crime rate drops off the edge of the map.

Jesse T. I must correct you on some of these:
Texas (Present) they are closer to 400,000 now perhaps even over that. I read about it recently in some article.
Florida now has 701,088 active permits as of 02/28/2010. Not sure if that figure includes non-resident licenses.
I think you are correct on Virginia.

Yeah, most of the numbers at least a couple years old, sorry about that.  I just compiled a quick google search of #'s

I just got my permit and crossbreed supertuck in the mail today 6/1/10. I applied on 5/3/10 so I guess it is taking about a month to process the permit's.

does anyone recall the legislature's initial projections for numbers of CCW permits?  Guess we aren't gonna make Dodge City status as predicted.

I would agree that that is what stops a lot of the people I talk to, or at least makes them think twice.

Another point I have is that the State Patrol took in $736,800 in issuing these permits, then every five years they have an ongoing income of half of that, nearly $370,000 to reissue a permit to someone who has no criminal activity in that time span. Just something I've thought about. I plan on keeping my permit current, but I think it could be more affordable.

20,000 in the first year was the prediction

$150.00 in permit fees over 10 years is less than I pay to license my dog.

"$150.00 in permit fees over 10 years is less than I pay to license my dog."

Since when is it any of the gumint's business that you have a dog?  Oh right!  It is the gubmint's BUSINESS to take money from those who have it, and give it to those they favor.....  That IS the trade they are engaged in:  Trading scraps of red tape for our CASH./ rant off.....

The Right to Keep and BEAR Arms is enshrined explicitly in both our State and Federal Constitutions, yet most of us are afraid to actually excercise that Right, for very good reason: there is a good chance of being arrested........ and  THAT is a damned shame.  III.
