This is why it is very important who you vote for president (the president appoints Supreme Court justices) and for US Senator. In order for a treaty to become binding it must be signed by the president and passed by a two thirds majority in the Senate. Right now I don't see this treaty passing the Senate even with the Democrats in control since there are some moderately "pro gun" democrats around who would probably not vote for this. Senators such as Ben Nelson, Jon Tester (Montana), Jimm Webb (Virginia) and some others.

So therefore it is very important to vote pro gun in every case. Usually the best choice is the Republican Candidate. If McCain would have been president we wouldn't have to deal with supreme court nominee Elena Kagan and McCain would probably not sign such a draconian treaty such as the UN Small Arms Treaty.

Yeah you're right Dan W. I don't trust Ben Nelson either and will definitely vote to throw him out in 2012. I think if he were the deciding vote he probably would vote for a UN Gun Ban. He has already voted for an anti-gun supreme court justice: Sonia Sotomayor.

My thought is that Nelson wouldn't vote for this.  You have much more to fear from RINOs like Dukakis in Maine than from moderate Dems from conservative states like Nelson and many others.  Their would be a significant filibuster to a treaty such as this, and all the libs in the Senate could do nothing to stop it.  The real fear would be a lame duck vote over Christmas with few people there to block or vote against it.

It never ceases to amaze me how political figure heads are quick to wag a finger in the name of altruistic causes and patriotism. And then as soon as attention is focused elsewhere they are trying to back-door the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

Typical for a Wash. Times editorial, there is little detail to back up the fear mongering. There isn't even a draft of the treaty to look at.

There is a lot of misinformation about the treaty and the reactions and distortions don't do anything to help promote the RKBA.  It makes us look unhinged.

No Husker Fan we are just trying to pre-empt the enemy before they unveil something and try to pass it quickly and without debate. They have proposed treaties in the past, and we know for a FACT that they are preparing to draft a treaty between now and 2012. The NRA has confirmed this and is gearing up for this fight as well.
