I hate being helplessly disarmed at work

SemperFiGuy is right about the concealed carry laws. However, and employer, including a school, can ban weapons from it's premises including employee's cars.
So, you wouldn't be guilty of a crime by keeping the gun in a locked compartment of a vehicle, but you could be fired if it is against the school's policy.

Wow, thanks Husker_Fan... didn't even think about looking at the handbook... I did after seeing your message, though. Sure enough, the Lincoln Public Schools handbook forbids employees from having a weapon, even specifically in their private vehicle on school property. Ugh. Was hoping to join a league at the indoor range here in Lincoln... this will about double my drive time as I will have to go home and then across town to get there.
Is it a little strange that an entity that receives federal and state funds can write a rule that trumps law?

Simple solution, don't park on LPS property, then they can't say anything about it.
HuskerXDM:
yes, had thought about that, and that's what I will do if I am transporting my gun
