Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg on Monday used a parade of relatives and friends of victims of several high-profile shootings, including the recent killings in Tucson, to urge Washington to strengthen existing federal gun control laws to prevent guns from falling into the hands of buyers with a history of violence or mental illness.

The mayor also said that Congress needed to require background checks of people who buy guns at gun shows. Mr. Bloomberg also urged President Obama to talk about gun control when he delivers his State of the Union address Tuesday night.

--- Quote ---Mr. Bloomberg said. ?Because the state of our union includes the tragic reality that 34 Americans are murdered with guns every single day, and most of them are purchased or possessed illegally."
--- End quote ---
So, by Mr. Bumburg's own admission most of these crimes are committed by people who's illegal purchases will not be affected by background checks and his proposed legislation will have minimal effect on the crimes he is seeking to prevent.
Brilliant!
