Illinois Officials Spar Over Order to Make List of Gun Owners Public
(1/1)
RLMoeller:
In a showdown over the privacy rights of gun owners, the Illinois State Police are refusing to release a list identifying all firearm permit holders in the state after Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan determined that the information "must" be made public.
The dispute, which soon could come before a judge, has been building since last fall when a reporter for The Associated Press made a Freedom of Information Act request to the police for the names of cardholders as well as information about the weapons each permit holder is authorized to carry.

Question:
Do we have laws in this State to prevent anything like this happening here?
AAllen:
Yes, in the CCW law there is protections that keep that information confidential.

Another example of why a Illinois FOID Card (Firearm Owner Identification Card) was a bad idea. This card is something that one must have to be legally in possession and ownership of any firearm in Illinois. So basically if this is public info, those that mean you harm can see who has the guns and who does not (this includes criminals, as well as nosy neighbors) and puts both gun and non gun owners at risk.
This is not possible in Nebraska because we don't have a permit to own a firearm. We only have permits to purchase handguns and permits to carry concealed handguns. And the concealed handgun permits are not public info according to our law. Don't know about the handgun purchase permits if they are public or not.
