Concealed carry from a cop's point of view.

Hmmm, I recall an Omaha officer M. Campbell.  About 5 yrs ago he stopped me for speeding.  No CCW then, just an open carry allowed and you needed a boot-lick permit for such.  I had it, i licked the boots and got an Omaha open carry permit.  I informed him I had a loaded handgun in the passenger seat.  Long story short, after being in cuffs for 15+ minutes while I listened to him chastise me for breaking the law he apologized while having me place the now unloaded firearm in my trunk.  He said he could give me a ticket for having an illegal gun.  He was nervous.  He was very unsure of what to do with me.  I could tell he, as a new cop, did not know how to deal with me.  I said "yes sir" about five or six times, he did not say "sir" even once.  Soooooo, long story, but I ended up getting a phone call from him and his Sgt. offering an apology (I opted for the informal process upon filing a complaint with the then liaison they had employed).  I had fun letting them know that as of then we were not in 1930's Germany and that the OPD needs to step up the recruit training in this area...

I realize this was (hopefully) an unusual situation and perhaps officer Campbell is a fine officer today, and understands that although our freedoms are dwindling daily, we are still somewhat free.

And yes, I would hope that if ever needed the police have a friend in me and in many of us.  We carry for the same reason they do.  Many of us recieve good training (Frontsight membership, in my case)  No, we won't go into a building we don't own and clear it, but for self defense our purpose is identical in regard to firearms...  I explained that to him while I was in cuffs after he asked me "why do you need a gun anyway?".

So, any officers reading this please know we are largely on your side.   ...As long as you are on the proper side of the Bill of Rights.

I was recently in a fender bender in Omaha.  A young driver rear-ended me.  An OPD officer showed up to take the report and got the other driver's info firs.  He then walked up to me.  I was standing outside the car with registration, driver's license, proof of insurance and my carry permit on top.

He said, "Hello," and I simply said, "hi, I need to let you know I have a permit to carry and I'm armed."  He took all the documents and handed by my CHL without looking at it.  His response was, "good for you. Thanks for letting me know."

He didn't ask what I was carrying or where, let alone ask me to surrender the gun.  It was a pretty positive experience, other than the need to replace my rear bumper.

Good!  Glad to see my training of the OPD has taken effect!  ;-)       My wife's daughter recently graduated the OPD academy and just finished her first 6 months in the field.  Have to say, well, i won't here, too many people i know might read this and be offended in regard to any comments regarding her firearm/firearm law, uh, "knowlege".  Other than that I have all the respect in the world for her, she is taking on a difficult career indeed.
