The Justice Department is expected to oust the head of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, according to people familiar with the matter, amid a troubled federal antitrafficking operation that has grown into the agency's biggest scandal in nearly two decades.
Associated Press Border Patrol agents in Arizona conduct a search of the site where an agent was killed in December.

Moves toward the replacement of Kenneth Melson, acting ATF director since April 2009, could begin next week, although the precise sequence of events remains to be decided, these people said.
The shakeup shows the extent of the political damage caused by the gun-trafficking operation called Fast and Furious, which used tactics that allowed suspected smugglers to buy large numbers of firearms. Growing controversy over the program has paralyzed a long-beleaguered agency buffeted by partisan battles. The ATF has been without a Senate-confirmed director since 2006, with both the Bush and Obama administrations unable to overcome opposition from gun-rights groups to win approval of nominees.

well that sucks.  (gross understatement)  What do you suppose will happen to the ATF after this?  I mean seriously, once you remove a standing head of any government agency its like dropping a chaos bomb.  Who knows what is going to happen?   Good luck to those aiming for a NFA approval.  I imagine an immediate moratorium on any requests coming into the ATF, and that is unfortunate.

What will happen is Andrew Traver's nomination will go through now, and he is U.S. gun owners' worst nightmare.

Wildgoose:
The NRA is calling for Holder to step down as well. There are some in Congress that are not willing to settle for tossing just BATF people under the bus to get this off the stage. Lets hope this can keep on going up the ladder far enough to take all the present players off the table or just maybe slow things down for the coming attack on our gun rights. I know its a lot to hope for but in an election cycle it my be enough to derail what many in the Democratic camp see as a liability for now.
