Guns and zoning ordinances are expected to be the hot topics at today's Omaha City Council meeting.
The council will vote on a series of proposed amendments to the city's weapons ordinance that public safety officials say are necessary to make city regulations consistent with state and federal gun laws.
Gun rights activists object, though, saying Omaha's plan saying the latest proposals create unnecessary, unfair or ambiguous regulations.
Part of the proposed changes to city law would waive registration fees for those who voluntarily register their handguns with the city. In 2010, the Legislature passed a law to clarify that Omaha residents with state concealed-weapon permits could bypass city registration requirements.
City officials also proposed an increase in the city's handgun registration fees from $10 to $15 for each concealable firearm for those who are not exempt from registration requirements. The pending changes also would explicitly allow legal immigrants to register handguns in Omaha, while expressly forbidding illegal immigrants from qualifying to register concealable guns.
One council member is expected to introduce a last-minute amendment to the bill to include explicit language allowing those with out-of-state concealed-weapon permits recognized by Nebraska to also waive city registration requirements.
