LSW student arrested, East student finds bullet.

Police searched the 17-year-old's car, which was parked in the Southwest lot, and found a shotgun and a black-powder rifle, Capt. David Beggs said. The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm on school property.

A tip led police to the weapons and there was no indication the student planned to bring them into school, Beggs said.

Also Monday morning, a Lincoln East student found a bullet in a hallway.

Shortly after students arrived, one of them discovered and turned in the bullet to administrators, according to a message sent by East to families. Campus security contacted district officials, but they determined it was an isolated incident.

Associate Principal Dennis Mann said the school day wasn't disrupted.

Maybe it's just me, but it seems obvious the LSW student had hunting tools in his vehicle. (a Blackpowder gun is not exactly a mass shooting type of device, the shotgun, maybe, but limited) now the Lincoln East incident would tend to worry me more,  (especially if a handgun round) I for one would like to be sure to find the source and be sure there isn't an (unauthorized) firearm to go along with it somewhere. 
Brings me to another point, is and unloaded, cased rifle or shotgun in the trunk by a parent in a school parking lot a no-no? 
As I understand it, a CCW weapon is to be locked away. ( but even that is a bit grayish)

A CHP holder  can carry inside the car on school property, but must secure the handgun in a locked container before exiting the vehicle.

As far as a cased rifle or shotgun locked in the trunk, I am thinking that is legal if the holder is not a prohibited person. A school employee could be fired for violating school policy.

I am sure about a student though, that there was a change in the  law concerning  this last year, making it a felony to have a gun on the campus of a school, and I was concerned about the high school trap teams getting caught up in it.

I seem to recall a case in Omaha of a (adult) guy with long guns in the back of his truck on school grounds, and having a scuffle with some gang bangers. But that was before the law was changed

(1) Any person who possesses a firearm in a school, on school grounds, in a school-owned vehicle, or at a school-sponsored activity or athletic event is guilty of the offense of unlawful possession of a firearm at a school. Unlawful possession of a firearm at a school is a Class IV felony.
(e) firearms contained within a private vehicle operated by a nonstudent adult which are not loaded and
(i)are encased or
(ii) are in a locked firearm rack that is on a motor vehicle, or
(f) a handgun carried as a concealed handgun by a valid holder of a permit issued under the Concealed Handgun Permit Act in a vehicle or on his or her person while riding in or on a vehicle into or onto any parking area, which is open to the public and used by a school if, prior to exiting the vehicle, the handgun is locked inside the glove box, trunk, or other compartment of the vehicle, a storage box
securely attached to the vehicle, or, if the vehicle is a motorcycle, a hardened compartment securely attached to the motorcycle while the vehicle is in or on such parking area, except as prohibited by federal law.

For purposes of this subsection, encased means enclosed in a case that is expressly made for the purpose of containing a firearm and that is completely zipped, snapped, buckled, tied, or otherwise fastened with no part of the firearm exposed.

All these laws are unconstitutional in my opinion and need to be struck down by the Supreme Court. It's a pile of bs! One way to defeat this particular load of horse manure is that the state needs to get with it and declare our vehicles an extension of our homes. My car=MY PROPERTY (whatever is in it is nobodies business) They already banned prayer in schools whats next?! No Bibles on school grounds which according to them includes your car?!!
This encroachment needs to stop! Many other states have statutes making your car an extension of your home. I think it is wrong for schools, employers etc. to be able to tell folks what they can or can't have in their own cars! My car is not their property. So I see this as a violation of MY property rights not theirs.

Lincoln Public Schools staff may not bring any weapon or part of a weapon on campus, even stored properly in accordance with state and federal law.  Staff sign a handbook stating it is grounds for termination.  Students, with zero tolerance policies, are suspended or expelled.

Now, speaking as someone who would benefit, I would LOVE for someone to 'ask' LPS to allow staff to follow state and federal rules (since they get state and federal dollars) without the threat of termination.  That trip to Thunder Alley goes from 40 minutes down to 15 for me because I don't have to go from school to home and then to the range... and no my school is not in a typical neighborhood with public streets all around.

Sorry, but being a product of LPS (back in the 80's) this kid screwed up.  If you don't know what the weapons policy is by now in high schools regarding weapons, you need to repeat some grades.  Back in the day when I shot trap informally with my HS team a few times, you didn't mention you had a shotgun in your car.  Not that it mattered as there was no policy, but there is now.
