For me its always been the 1874 Sharps buffalo gun. I wanted one from the first time I saw pictures of them in the old gun catalogs I read over and over again as a kid. The lines of the rifle with its big exposed hammer and falling block action, not to mention the massive cartridges it was chambered for, set the hook for good.

By the time I got 1% of all my thoughts pecked out on this keyboard, a good chunk of SQUIRREL! those ideas would have changed......

One thing that won't change with me, though: pretty is as pretty does.  If it works, beautiful!  If it does not, I don't care how pretty it is ....... in fact, if it is so pretty and/or expensive, such that I'd be afraid to damage it, well, then I don't think I would want it.

Right now, the sweetest thing I have is the "Kids' Deer Gun" ..... a Ruger Frontier in 7-08 ........ that is just the handiest little gun, and kills deer just as dead as guns 30% bigger and heavier.......

You make a great point I agree with. I did finally get that 74 Sharps. It has also seen hard use in competition over the twenty two years I have had it. Several thousand rounds of black powder cast bullet loads. Lots of great friends and times to go along with it. I shoot all kinds of rifles in other venues but this one is the one thats still the boss gun.

Personally, I like the REMINGTON 700 VTR.  Something about that triangular barrel that just says "cool".
