Bruning supports anti-gang measure
LINCOLN - A legislative proposal designed to help Omaha establish a gang-violence prevention program has won a key ally.
Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning has agreed to support creation of an office of violence prevention within the Nebraska Crime Commission.
While the agreement comes with few funding promises, it?s an important compromise, said State Sen. Brad Ashford of Omaha, who has made attacking the increase in gang shootings in Omaha his top priority in the Nebraska Legislature this year.
?It really reflects a realization that crime prevention is a part of law enforcement. It?s a big change,? Ashford said.
Addressing the cycle and escalation of gang violence has emerged as a major issue this year.
In Omaha, at least 11 of last year?s 44 homicides were linked to gangs. All three candidates for Omaha mayor have made gang violence a campaign issue.
The proposed gang-violence office would help Omaha and other cities seek grants for violence-prevention programs. Bruning said he?s tentatively agreed to push for $100,000 in funding.
