I remember reading somewhere that part of the reason we see so many soldiers now with traumatic brain injuries is because the helmets are so much better these days. Projectiles that would have killed a man outright in the past are now slowed to a point that they only injure the brain. Not much comfort for guy who has to learn to walk and talk all over again, but it's progress.
