Acceptable?  No, not really.  I also dont believe that banging my head into a rock is going to harm the rock.  As technology advances problems like this are solved or minimized, but situations like this cannot be avoided 100% of the time.  Its just a fact of life.  I am far more of a "realist" than an "idealist", which my wife says makes my cup always half empty.
