On May 20th, the Eastern Nebraska Practical Shooters will be hosting its annual Man vs Man steel match---and you should try it.
The match is run in a double-elimination tournament-bracket format, and each matchup is won based on the best two out of three runs. For each run, you and your opponent are each faced with identical sets of steel targets, including one (each) that cross over each other when they fall. At the start signal, you draw and knock over the steel as fast as you can, with that crossing steel
last. After each run, whoever's steel is on the
bottom, AND all their other steel are down---that person wins. Win two out of three, and you advance. Lose, and you head to the other bracket.
Double elimination, so you will get a minimum of 4 runs. (And with participation the way it has been, you'll get a LOT more. We've had some great turnouts in the past few years.) Categories are either "Irons" or "Open". Guns suitable for Production, Limited, L-10, or Single-stack are all suitable for Irons. (You won't want to try this with a revolver---matter of fact, you won't leave yourself much margin for error with a single-stack, either.) Open is for those folks who can't aim with regular iron sights and need compensators to handle the recoil for them.
All you need is an accurate gun, three magazines (in case it goes to three runs), and a good belt and holster. If you have to reload, chances are you've already lost...but it never hurts to have another mag handy, so a mag pouch won't hurt your chances any either. And lots of ammunition.
That's in the morning---after a lunch (provided with match fee!) we do it again, but with shotguns. Single elimination this time, with both pump and semi-auto divisions. If you feel like it, bring one of each and we'll try to get you in both divisions.
We have people of all experience levels participating, so come out and give it a try. It really is a ton of fun.
Here's a video with some clips of what it looks like. (Ignore the 6x6 wood shoot at the end---it seems we won't be doing that this year.) That's Lindsey channeling Yosemite Sam at the beginning there, by the way.
