Seems a simple choice, but what if it's warranty work at the dealer and there isn't another dealer close/available/convenient/etc?

Do what I do.  Stand outside of the drive-in doors and yell for assistance from a tech.  When they notice that you wont walk in and eventually come to you, explain what and why.  The guy behind the counter does not make the rules, but you can bet that the owner/boss hears about what happened each and every time.
