  NRA-ILA Grassroots Alert Vol. 16, No. 12                                         3/27/09

War on Drugs, or on Gun Owners' Rights?

As the issue of Mexican violence continues to boil over, it has become clear that for many anti-gun politicians, the war on drugs and the war on gun owners' rights are the same thing.

This past week, there were two more hearings in Congress on the topic of Mexican drug cartels. That brings the total to eight hearings so far, and there are field hearings already set to take place in Phoenix and Houston.

U.S. Senator Defends American Gun Owners-Again:  As reported above, and in last week's Grassroots Alert, the attempt to blame America's lawful gun owners and its gun laws for the horrific violent acts of Mexican drug cartels continues, spurred on by Secretary of State Clinton and her foray south of the border.

Fortunately, gun owners do have some advocates in congress.

NRA Files Second Amended Complaint in Heller v. D.C.:  NRA filed a second amended complaint in Dick Anthony Heller et al v. District of Columbia in U.S. District Court. NRA and other plaintiffs are asking the court to issue a preliminary and permanent injunction to prevent the D.C. Council from implementing laws that violate the Second Amendment and from enforcing its prohibitions on the possession of commonly owned firearms.

Three Items of Note:
    1. The Truth About Guns in Mexico
    2. Range Protection: Don't let noise open the door
    3. First Responders: Are you a Volunteer Security Guard?

The truth About Mexican Crime Guns

The often repeated statistic that 90% to 95% of guns seized in Mexico are traced back to the U.S. is an outrageous distortion.  The actual statistic is more like 17% and even that might be exaggerated...  Read the whole story at http://www.FirearmsCoalition.org

Range Protection: The Noisy Wheel Gets the Shaft

(April 2, 2009) Range protection is a hot topic these days and it?s becoming more important every day.  Urban sprawl continues to envelope ranges and traditional shooting areas, pushing shooters farther and farther out to engage in their sport and training.  Developers build houses closer and closer to established ranges and soon the new residents are complaining about the noise.  While much of the emphasis in range protection has been focused on passing laws shielding ranges from noise complaints, such laws only provide limited protection and can give ranges a false sense of security...  Read the whole story at http://www.FirearmsCoalition.org

VSGAA Back on Track
Last year we launched a new organization called the Volunteer Security Guard Association of America.  Unfortunately we got backed up with the election and other matters and the VSGAA languished in limbo... Until now.  We're finally moving forward with our plans for a group dedicated to the idea of armed citizens as first responders.  The first membership certificates and cards went out in the mail last week and we're ready to begin recruiting new members.
You know that America's first line of defense against criminals, terrorists, and other threats is the armed citizen.  You know that America's last line of defense against criminals, terrorists, invasion, and tyrants is the armed citizen.  The media was quick to label Jeanne Assam as a "volunteer security guard" when she successfully defended her fellow church members from a murderous assault.  If the media wants to call armed citizens "volunteer security guards," we'll play along.  Join VSGAA today.  Visit http://www.VSGAA.org

Stay involved and don't ever let up on those who work for We The People. Remember they are NOT ours boses. We are theirs and it's time they get reminded of that.
