The first place I saw TANSTAAFL was in Robert Heinlein's novel, The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress. It describes the struggle by citizens of a lunar colony, which had become self sufficient, to gain independence from Earth. Like most of Heinlein's work, it is a good read.
