--- Quote ---WASHINGTON — Is your workplace getting shot up by a crazed gunman?

No problem — just grab a pair of scissors and fight back!

That’s some of the helpful advice in a new instructional video from the Department of Homeland Security that was posted on the agency’s Web site just a month after the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut

Mudinyeri:
Just don't run with those scissors!

In defense of the video, they are suggesting that you may want to consider overpowering the active shooter - if no other options exist - and that you can utilize things, like scissors, as weapons if you have no other weapons.  Personally, I don't mind this message.  Too many people won't even consider fighting for their lives nor would they think creatively about available weapons of defense.  At least the video doesn't rule out fighting back.

I love bringing scissors to a gun fight.

Unforutnately, I do not think this video is about trying to fight back.  The message they are sending is that what we have laying around is enough protect us.  No more guns really needed.

If I have to go after a gunman with scissors I will sue the carp out of my employer.    Its time we get a court precident that says our employers need to protect us if they wont allow us to protect ourselves.

Yes, I will sit with an ar-15 in my cube if I could.  I would also take one to  pick up my children from school, if I could.  But in both instances all I will have is pencils and scissors and I guess that is enough according to them.

I suppose homeland security probably has armed security guards.....

Ps:  My employer does have "active shooter" training.  But only director level and above attended.  I gues these people, who at my company are essentially politicians, are going to protect us all?  unless of course the traning is to show them where the nearest locked concrete VIP fallback room is...  Kept secret from the rest of us.   >:D

Phantom:
OH GREAT now they want to ban my Assult Scissors too.

Mudinyeri:
"If you are caught out in the open and cannot conceal yourself or take cover you might consider trying to overpower the shooter with whatever means are available."

The B-roll shows a pair of scissors.  I don't know of many offices that allow open or concealed carry.  So, showing a guy sitting in a cubicle in camo pants with a 1911 in a thigh holster probably isn't very realistic - especially if you consider the video's likely audience.

I dunno, I guess there are enough real dragons out there that I'm not looking to tilt at any windmills.  Personally, I'm somewhat impressed that a video from DHS even mentions fighting back.

With that said, I would support an effort to hold employers responsible for protecting their employees if they specifically prevent their employees from protecting themselves.
