The Manchin-Toomey background check bill ~not good~
« on: April 10, 2013, 12:41:10 PM »

This is the proverbial Trojan Horse if I ever seen one...    >:D

http://www.toomey.senate.gov/?p=press_release&id=965

Summary:

Encourage states to provide all their available records to NICS by restricting federal funds to states who do not comply.

Closes the gun show and other loopholes while exempting temporary transfers and transfers between family members.

Fixes interstate travel laws for sportsmen who transport their firearms across state lines in a responsible manner. The term “transport” includes staying in temporary lodging overnight, stopping for food, buying fuel, vehicle maintenance, and medical treatment.

Protects sellers from lawsuits if the weapon cleared through the expanded background checks and is subsequently used in a crime. This is the same treatment gun dealers receive now.

Allows dealers to complete transactions at gun shows that take place in a state for which they are not a resident.

Requires that if a background check at a gun show does not result in a definitive response from NICS within 48 hours, the sale may proceed. After four years, when the NICS improvements are completed, the background check would clear in 24 hours. Current law is three business days.

Requires the FBI to give priority to finalizing background checks at gun shows over checks at store front dealerships.

Authorizes use of a state concealed carry permit instead of a background check when purchasing a firearm from a dealer.

Permits interstate handgun sales from dealers.

Allows active military to buy firearms in their home states.

Family transfers and some private sales (friends, neighbors, other individuals) are exempt from background checks.
Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

I just received this email:

Are Senators Deb Fischer and Mike Johanns going to vote for Obama’s gun control agenda?

The showdown over this anti-gun nightmare in the U.S. Senate will likely be decided within the next several days.

As I write, Democrat Leader Harry Reid is laboring on a deal with weak-kneed Republican Senators like Pennsylvania’s Pat Toomey and Oklahoma’s Tom Coburn to dramatically expand the federal Brady gun registration system.

But Capitol Hill insiders report this is nothing more than a vehicle bill for the rest of Obama’s agenda.

Sadly, it appears that Senators Deb Fischer and Mike Johanns may be lining up with Toomey, Coburn and Reid in this dirty deal.

And anti-gun Senators Chuck Schumer and Diane Feinstein can hardly contain their excitement.

They are ready with a raft of amendments to ban magazines, crack-down on gun and ammo sales and permanently strip millions of law-abiding Americans of their gun rights.

Even the so-called “assault weapons” ban could be back on the table.

But first they must have a vehicle bill, and they must clear the 60-vote filibuster hurdle. Only then can they use their thin Democrat majority to pass new gun control.

Senator Reid’s plan is to bring an innocent-sounding gun-related bill (currently S. 649) to the floor to overcome this obstacle.

Then it’s off to the races with as much gun control as they can pile on. It’s an old trick play, used many times in the past.

The good news is pro-gun Senator Rand Paul has pledged to filibuster any gun legislation Senator Harry Reid plans to move to the Senate floor for “debate.”

If Senator Paul can get 40 Senators to stand with him, the fight is over and no gun bill will be able to break through this logjam.

13 Senators have already joined Senator Paul.

The bad news is Senators Deb Fischer and Mike Johanns have not signed on to help stop Reid’s anti-gun scheme!

Instead, they are riding the fence, possibly so they can cut deals and “horse-trade” on amendments with the likes of Reid, Toomey and Coburn.

Never mind the fact that you and I are about to get kicked in the teeth with one of the worst anti-gun bills America has seen in decades.

That’s why I’m asking you to call and leave a message for Senators Deb Fischer and Mike Johanns at the numbers below.

Tell them to stand with Senator Paul against ALL of Obama’s gun control agenda, and INSIST they stop trying to cut deals that will almost certainly end in a loss of freedom.

Our gun rights are too important to bargain away in a back-room deal.

And if Deb Fischer and Mike Johanns are involved in such a scheme, they need to hear from you.

For Freedom,

Dudley Brown
Executive Vice President

P.S. Your Senators, Deb Fischer and Mike Johanns, are riding the fence on Obama’s gun control package in the U.S. Senate.

Maybe they want to see this anti-gun bill move forward on the Senate floor so they can “horse-trade” with Democrat Leader Harry Reid.

The problem is that once the bill is up for “debate,” the gun control crowd has what they need to pass huge chunks of Obama’s anti-gun agenda.

They are ready with a raft of amendments to ban magazines, crack-down on gun and ammo sales and permanently strip millions of law-abiding Americans of their gun rights.

Even the so-called “assault weapons” ban is back on the table.

Pro-gun Senator Rand Paul has pledged to filibuster any gun legislation Senator Harry Reid tries to move to the floor.

If he can get 40 Senators to join him, Paul can block any action on gun control and the fight will be over. 13 have already signed on.

But at this critical moment, Senators Deb Fischer and Mike Johanns are hanging back!

Please give Deb Fischer and Mike Johanns a call right now and INSIST they stand with Sen. Paul against S. 649 and any other vehicle bill for gun control.

Yeah and according to this article we (Toomey) gave up some things we were suppose to receive in turn for the deal. Basically Toomey just compromised our rights away in turn for NOTHING!

"Schumer negotiated several changes to the initial Manchin-Toomey proposal, including striking language from the agreement allowing concealed permit holders to carry their weapons in other states, and limiting Internet sales to five guns per year. He also worked to make sure there is a 72-hour window for performing background checks except for gun-show sales, which will be cleared in 48 hours initially.

Kirk and Schumer were no-shows at Wednesday’s presser. Senate sources say Schumer in particular was directed to stay away at Toomey’s request."

I just received this email:

I got the same one from the NAGR, I called Fischers and Johanns lincoln offices. The rep from fishcer said she would vote absolutely no on anything for gun control, no compromise. The representative from Johanns office said he supported the 2A but needed to read the language of the proposal first; so that was not good. I politely asked him to have Mr. Johanns call me as soon ASAP.
