Omaha City Election 2013
« on: May 14, 2013, 08:10:01 PM »
To avoid contaminating the NFOA-PAF thread...

Early on, she's doing good:

Jean Stothert 16,665 60%
(i) Jim Suttle 11,012 40%

Read more: http://livewire.ketv.com/Event/Omaha_General_Election#ixzz2TJqbdsWr

7% turnout according to those numbers, they were expecting 35% turnout... a ways to go.

The NFOA-PAF councilfolks aren't doing so well though.  But again, all these numbers are early.

I've got a question.

Suttle's party is at a firefighter's union hall.

While I understand that the party can be held anywhere... and the space can be donated by anyone ... doesn't this seem a bit strange ?  As in 'obvious' ?

What if an elected official had their party at a gun range or NRA sponsored something or another ? Wouldn't there be outcry from the media ?

Hmmm....

I would think that the support from the firefighter's union has to be hurting Suttle in a lot of areas, despite all the money they give him.  I don't live in Omaha, but I get the impression that a lot of people there are pretty fed up with the public employee unions and what they perceive as excessive salaries.

They could have driven him there sitting atop a ladder truck with the lights and sirens going and no one would or at least should be surprised.

Do you mean the salaries that Stothert negotiated?

Unfy thanks for the post and following how our endorsed candidates faired.

Now is the time to look back upon these races and determine what happened in them, why our candidates won or lost and what we could have done better.  I have relationships with all of these candidates (even most of the ones that did not get our endorsements) and their campaign managers.  We will be talking about what went right, what went wrong and how we can turn some of these districts around.

One of the things that I know is already being worked upon is a voter drive in South Omaha, this is an area that the unions has had a strong influence in for over 20 years.  With a large Hispanic Community that, though they are conservative in their values, has not been engaged and active as voters.  In fact many are not even registered to vote though they are legal citizens.

These types of activities, along with developing, maintaining and educating these voters will not only help us gain ground in the City of Omaha, but because there are at least 3 Legislative Districts that this could effect would go a long way toward turning the Legislature around.  This is the types of activities that the unions have been strong in and a major part of what the PAF has been formed to do.  So as the plan gets put together on how to address these issues be watching for the PAF to be actively involved, and looking for your assistance in these efforts.

What may some of the things be, we could be looking for volunteers to go door to door registering voters.  We could be running issue advertising on the radio, Spanish channels particularly (cheap and very directed for an educational message).  We could do signage and seminars, lots of possibilities and chances for people to lend a hand.

Also I will note the PAF did go 3 for 5 in City Council races and endorsed the new Mayor.  I know that Jean and her campaign folks appreciated the support and ability we offered to them of being able to post in our Friends of the NFOA FB page.  Also our endorsed City Council Candidates were very appreciative of our endorsements and publicized them to help in their campaigns.  We were noticed and heard.

On the plus side we now have three City Council members that are generally pro rights, two that are against us and two to act as swing votes.  Along with a Mayor that will be supportive.  This will not change things overnight but we will at least have the ability to be heard and taken seriously.

Thanks for your note, I knew about three weeks ago I was not going to win, and the 23% of the vote I received was a little more than I or several "experts" expected.  This is what happens when you get outspent by 100 to 1 on the campaign,.  The large amount of support that Katie had from the Chamber of Commerce couple with their threat to spend whatever they had to win while having $50,000 in the bank kept people from being willing to donate to my campaign because they felt it would just go into a cash fight that could not be won.

Of course I had supporters already asking me to run for something else again last night, noting the cash issue and that there is people that support me and this was just a bad race to be in.

I figured including that bit of note would help make things a bit more useful as well as 'bring it back home' a bit.

And you're welcome.  Thanks for all the hard work ya do for us :)

I'm tentatively encouraged by Stothert.  I hope she turns out awesome, but I'll admit to being a bit 'middled' by her campaign stances a couple months ago and also her victory speech.  None of the candidates really caught my eye (and am not a single issue voter).  Although I'll admit her victory speech was playing proper politics which is either a good or bad thing, I dunno heh :).

I'm sure she'll be 100x better than Suttle, but not sure if she'll be outstanding or not.
