IDPA Nebraska Indoor and Outdoor Matches

IDPA Nebraska (http://www.idpanebraska.com and http://www.facebook.com/idpanebraska) now has five IDPA-Certified Safety Officers, which will allow us to host Tier 1 IDPA club-affiliated indoor and outdoor matches as well as IDPA classifiers at various range venues in Nebraska.  As interest and numbers of registrants grow to the requirements of IDPA, Tier 2 IDPA sanctioned matches will also be scheduled, which allow shooters to earn points towards eligibility to competing in the IDPA Nationals.

Indoor matches will be held the first Saturday of every month beginning December 7, 2013 at Thunder Alley Indoor Shooting Range (http://www.thunderalley.us/idpa-nebraska/) in Lincoln, NE. Briefing will be at 7:30am, walk-through will be at 7:45am, and matches will be from 8:00am-11:00am. $5 for members of Thunder Alley and $10 for non-members of Thunder Alley.  Please be familiar with the rules of IDPA http://www.idpa.com/compete/rules if you are going to participate!

Outdoor matches are currently in the process of being scheduled to start in the Spring of 2014 at Izaak Walton Lincoln Chapter (dates to be announced as soon as they are finalized on their calendar).  They may also be held at another Nebraska outdoor range location as details are currently in the development stages.

IDPA Classifiers have not yet been scheduled, but they will be held at both Thunder Alley and Ike's.  Since they are time-intensive to run on an individual basis, IDPA members will have priority since those results lend to national classifications in the different IDPA divisions.

For those who are new to shooting IDPA matches, there will be 2-hour "IDPA 101" courses scheduled to be held at Thunder Alley; the course will be comprised of class time to introduce the basic concepts of IDPA matches as well as range time for some basic IDPA shooting experience.

When we met with the Board at Ike's, they were very respectful, receptive, and inquisitive to hearing our proposal. Based on our experience with them that evening, we wouldn't have anything disparaging to say about them.  We at IDPA Nebraska are very grateful for the time that they allowed us to present before them as well as for the time that the Board took over the next ensuing couple of months to consider the proposal and to subsequently respond to us in a very timely and respectful manner.

In addition to fulfilling the mission and vision of IDPA Nebraska http://idpanebraska.com/index.html, our goal is to not disappoint any range venue that allows us to co-host an IDPA Tier 1 (Club-Affiliated) and/or Tier 2 (Sanctioned) IDPA match and IDPA Classifier at their facility, which is why we assure any of the range venues that IDPA Nebraska will adhere to the rules and safety regulations of IDPA...and then some, while also making the events fun and enjoyable experiences so that the registrants want to come back again.

So straight forward question.  Will Ike's allow true action shooting? Moving, shooting, and competitors with holstered/unloaded firearms walking around?

Fly, I am not trying to circumnavigate the shrubbery with my answer.

Ike's is allowing us to co-host IDPA matches during which there *may or may not* be some shooting during a stage when the shooter moves from one position (P1) to the next position (P2), depending upon what the Course of Fire (CoF) calls for; most times there is NOT shooting when moving from one position to the next, but per IDPA, the shooter must NOT move from one position of cover to another position of cover with an unloaded handgun nor can the shooter do a reload when on the move between positions of cover.

Per IDPA, competitors can have unloaded/holstered handguns while "walking around" or they can have unloaded handguns in a gun bag.  If a range has safety rules that preclude such "walking around" with unloaded/holstered handguns, then per IDPA, the range rules supersede and, as such, we (IDPA Nebraska) will honor the safety rules of the range.

When we have our first CoF design for an IDPA outdoor match to be held at Ike's, we will present it to them so that there are no misunderstandings between the parties.  As will always be our goal, and Ike's understands this, we want the matches to be safe and fun.

FWIW, IDPA Nebraska invited an Ike's Board member to one of our indoor matches, and he attended and participated and had first hand observation and experience of how we operate...and that was PRIOR to the Board providing approval of our proposal.

Thanks Aldo.  It is possible that the differences between IDPA and USPSA are enough that the board will allow the matches, and IDPA Nebraska only slightly alters their procedures to the board's liking.  It will be interesting to see how it all works out.

I try my best to stay out of the politics of whatever may be the case with the types of shooting sports that are allowed or not at Ike's.  Maybe it's a finer line between Ike's perception of IDPA shooting and IDPA Nebraska's perception than I realize, and only time will tell.

IDPA Nebraska certainly didn't change anything with the spirit of IDPA solely so that we would obtain approval from Ike's.  I sincerely believe that what we proposed to them and how we answered their questions were with integrity and within the latitudes given by IDPA relative to their Course of Fire designs.

The indoor sessions that we have had thus far have been a great training ground for both safety officers and shooters who are relatively new to IDPA, even if it is on a smaller scale than what would be the case with an outdoor setting.  As long as the Safety Officers adhere to the safety principles and foundations of IDPA along with the range's safety rules during the overseeing of the matches, all should be okay for all parties in the long run.  Having a group of us successfully completing the IDPA Safety Officer Certification training should also lend to an even more positive experience.

I wholeheartedly concur with you that it will be interesting to see how it all works out. Hopefully what IDPA Nebraska does will help pave the way for more types of shooting  matches at Ike's as well as at other outdoor ranges in Nebraska.
