We mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.

One of the things I've always liked about this statement, that I think often goes unnoticed, is that the three things being pledged appear to be listed in ascending order of importance.  That order says much about the moral decay of our times.

Some might argue that fortune is less important than life, but I would say that there is a deeper meaning, which includes the well-being of their family.  But sacred honor being more important than life and even family is something many of us have lost.  Sadly.

If I remember my American history right the Jefferson draft was heavily edited.  The phrase in the 2nd and most famous sentence, self evident, was sacred and undeniable in Jefferson's draft.  I think that version was better, since those things listed were clearly not self evident at the time.  Just another example of how editors tend to screw things up.  Still one of the best documents ever written in human history.
