This is encouraging for all of us Omaha people.

http://www.ketv.com/news/local-news/mayor-stothert-applies-for-concealed-carry-permit/-/9674510/21490024/-/hyhv48z/-/index.html

"It's not an issue of who I am afraid of. It's an issue of I am not afraid to protect myself,” Stothert said.

“I do have a pistol. I know how to shoot it, and I know how to shoot it really, really well. That's why I decided to take the class,” Stothert said.

“I want to let the people of Omaha know that I am a supporter of responsible gun ownership and the rights people have to protect themselves,” Stothert said.

I spoke with her awhile back and she said she was going to do it, very glad she did and made it very public!!
Having a CCW is like a seat belt in a car, a hassle to put on and uncomfortable to wear, you pray you never need it but thank God for it if you do. It is there to protect yourself and your family the only difference is a seatbelt is MANDATORY by law!! ~ Me

I kept saying I would like to see her come out a publicly denounce the previous mayor's stance on guns and his involvement  with MAIG.  BUT. that'll do. ;)

But... but... she'll only have the gun taken away from her and used against her!  She doesn't have the training that law enforcement and the military (and Joe Biden)!  She's like 158,000x more likely to shoot a family member than a bad guy!  It's like going back to the wild, wild west!  The streets will flow with rivers of blood!

I know 'cause that's all we've seen since CCW became law here and that's what the bedwetters predicted.

Still not enough to get me to move to Omaha or Douglas county, but it put a huge smile on my face.

I'm gonna offer to teach Mayor Stothert's CHP class for free.

And then encourage her to join us evenings here on the NFOA Forum.

And shoot on my IDPA/IPSC team.

And maybe convince her that Forum members should be able to use the Omaha Police Department range when the LEOs are not engaged in qualification and training.

Well another remember took care of the free class.

You would be surprised on who checks in here that don't post.  Also our FB page gets some interesting folks stopping by.

I was thinking more the upcoming woman's group than IDPA, but who knows where things could go.

How about forum members run the PD range and they need to qualify to our standards. :o

Not a bad thing of course, I am glad gunowners are the group she is trying to connect with,  if she was really in tune with guns though she would have gotten her permit years ago.  She has political motives for things she does, as long as she runs pro-gun side I am ok with it but question and monitor always question and monitor.

Gun owners always bring Ronald Regan up, but he was the president that signed the Machinegun Ban into law.  While he was shaking the hand of gun owners on campaign.

Last I saw she was talking about it on TV ( Channel 7? maybe )
She said that she'd already taken the Class ( it was taught by an Omaha Police officer )

I got the Feeling from what was reported that She had all ready applied or had already gotten her CHP.

Not that She was going to do it....or planing todo it in the near Future.

But that She allready had gone and done it.

She was saying something about wanting to also see what was ( taught in / what the class was like).

Reached out to "Nebraskans for Peace"

I consider that name to be arrogant and condescending, the implication being that if you are not a member of that group then you are for war.   I've been living in Nebraska for 50 years and I've never met a Nebraskan who wasn't for peace. I've never met anyone who was for peace at any price, either.

The word "peace" has been redefined by many political groups.  Knowing people in that group their definition of "peace" is
http://thepeoplescube.com/peoples-tools/the-people-s-glossary-t42.html#Peace
Quote
Peace
"The meaning of peace is the absence of opposition to socialism" (Karl Marx). Also known as World Peace. The essense of the international peace movement is, therefore, to fight opposition to socialism and shake the foundations of capitalism until the Party gains control of the government and silences thought criminals by legislative means. Until then, all those who oppose progress must be denounced as enemies of peace, reactionary warmongers, child murderers, and little Eichmanns. The need to advance World Peace may involve violent uprisings, looting, expropriations, and extermination of enemies of World Peace. To the uninitiated such activities may look like war, but in reality it is struggle for World Peace. When a progressive group engages in mass murder, torture, imprisonment, deportations, and terror, they are only advancing Peace. But when the U.S. government tries to stop them, it endangers World Peace with imperialist wars of aggression. That's why Che Guevara is a fighter for peace, while George Bush is an evil warmonger. Other noted fighters for World Peace include Yaser Arafat, Carlos the Jackal, Unabomber, Saddam Hussein, and Joseph Stalin (who is credited with organizing and financing the first international peace movements).

I was thrilled to hear the announcement whether for political reasons or not.  Maybe with her own CHP and Marty Bilek's, she can do without an armed posse of security and the necessary vehicles to haul them around, thus saving the city some money?

If she really did browse this forum I'd like her to understand one thing about gun owners. While the ability to defend oneself may never have to be exercised, the RESPONSIBILITY which comes with ownership must be exercised every day.  I think a CHP is the ultimate acknowledgement of that responsibility, and in todays world where people refuse to accept the responsibility involved with dog ownership or a drivers license, the commitment should be recognized and respected.

Love the way you put that, RedDot.  That's EXACTLY it.  One can argue about rights all day long or the media can quarrel about whether the rights should be there in the first place. But I might go so far as to say that it's the resulting responsibility that affects the most change in society rather than the original right.  Both are necessary: rights are the framework within which responsibility can and must be exercised.  Unfortunately we don't hear about the many positive effects responsibility has, just the negative results of irresponsibility...both of which are results of liberty (for lack of better terms during a busy workday).  And both of which will exist for as long as liberty remains.
