Title: Are there any Kydex/leather Sheath/Holster makers around Lincoln?
Post by: Johnny2Glocks on August 06, 2011, 09:49:31 AM
Was wondering if there are any custom sheath/holster makers around the Lincoln area. If there are I would love to give him/her some business. If not I am ordering the sheets of kydex and making my own.

I do some work in Omaha.  If you search for my user name and Kydex, here on the forum, you'll see a few of my projects.

Thanks Mud! I have a small Damascus blade I need a sheath for.  As well as I would like an IWB for my Walther PPS with an Insight XL2.

I just did a mag pouch for my PPS today.  I can do a hybrid IWB like the one in the pic below if you're interested.

Here's what I did for my PPS mag pouch.  It'll hold the standard mag or the extended one.

That looks awesome! I'm still pretty new to CCW(just returning to the free world from Commifornia) so I really would like to see what would fit/feel best to me. I like the looks of the hybrid Mud! How much would you charge for a fine holster like that?! I'm definitely interested!

Cost depends on materials.  Are you looking for cow hide or horse hide?

Well, whats the difference? Do they wear differently, is one hotter to wear or more durable?

Cow hide is less expensive and will absorb sweat more.  Comfort is very subjective but I find them both about the same.

I don't have any horse hide on hand and would have to order it.

Horse hide is also a lot stiffer and harder to work with.  For cost and the intent for which this is used cow hide should be the easy decision. JMHO

Maybe.  :)

Horse hide seems to be very popular among hybrid IWB holster-makers.  It makes a little better sweat guard than cow hide.

Just wear an undershirt?  Its what I would do.

I found this to be true when I started carrying.  An undershirt really makes an IWB holster a LOT more comfortable.

I have a couple of Crossbreed holsters with a lot of time on them. One is made of cow, the other horse. The cowhide got pretty soft and worn after about 6 months of continuous use. It wore particularly quickly in the summer. The horsehide one is on my hip right now - it has been worn every day since October of 2009. While it definitely looks used, it doesn't show any real wear. It doesn't absorb sweat nearly as badly as the cowhide, either.

I highly recommend using horses to make holsters.

I think I would be fine with cowhide for my first one. Although Horsehide sounds a lot nicer.
