Hey all,
I just stumbled across a ad on Craigslist and made the phone call.
Larry with the local VFW posts / Honor Guards is looking to replace their old Rifle cases as their old ones are falling apart, and have been patched together.
As the State's Firearms association, I thought maybe we could pull together and get them some.
We can either come together and buy new ones or gather up some of our no longer used ones.
They need 7 (obviously).
What say you? Can we do this for the guys that have had our backs all these years?
Contact me and I will set up a time to gather them up.
-
What type od cases are they looking for softsides card case matching?
-
how fancy do the cases need to be? Plastic hard cases run what $20-$25? Seems like a good way to get good PR, can't NFOA cut a check? Seems like a no-brainer.
-
He really didn't specify. Said "Even if they were the simple zippered ones, that would work."
I was thinking the soft cases, as I have a few older ones I don't use.
But now am thinking maybe some hard cases would last longer?
I've put out a feeler to a couple suppliers to see if we can get 7 new matching cases cheap.
Whatcha got?

We probably could, but I thought I would see what the members had to offer before I went thru that process.
-
I would think we could find some shop to order and we buy at cost. Wish i knew more people I would make calls. I do know one guy he is just starting his shop up. He might be able to do something. I will reach out to him.
-
Would Rod Moeller's shop be willing to sell the cases at a discount?
-
I just texted my ffl. He said he would be willing to help. I would like to get him some more info. Hard or soft length of case?

Count me in for a donation towards new cases ...Need to be at least 45" long for a Garand?
-

I would.
-
I would contribute to the cause. Just let me know.
-
I'd contribute. Think there's an extra case or 2 around.
-
If you are going for hard side cases, would it be more economical from a dollar point and a handling point to get double cases rather that single?
WalMart carries Plano 2-scoped rifle, hard side case, model 10586-99, for less that $25.00. Internal dimension is 51.7 inches.
-
If the decision is made to purchase new ones, I would contribute cash to the cause.
Way to get involved brothers :)

Ok, I just talked to Larry again and got more info.
He handles the Honor Guard for VFW posts 3606 (out on W. "A") and 131 (N. 77th)
Sounds like because of the cabinet they are stored in, Soft cases are the best option.
They are using the M1s (.30 carbines from what I can surmise.)
I have a couple guys Moeller Arms, and American Reaper Arms that have expressed interest in helping.
A little background Larry gave me- The money for upkeep of Honor Guard equipment, etc comes from donations from the family or the pockets of the Vets themselves. They recently picked up a couple on sale at Menards, but said the plastic zippers are already failing.
I envision something like this- just because that's how I am:
http://www.ima-usa.com/u-s-wwii-fleece-lined-m1-carbine-rifle-case-marked-u-s.html (http://www.ima-usa.com/u-s-wwii-fleece-lined-m1-carbine-rifle-case-marked-u-s.html)
I'm not sure if we can get a break on these somewhere? But Fleece Lined, leather reinforcements, metal YKK zipper. should hold up a long time. And mostly, historically correct.
What do you guys think? Think we could set up a fund for such an endeavor?
You know me always thinking, but maybe this is something we can do on a yearly basis?
I mean as much as we "fight" to protect our rights, these guys fought and gave blood, sweat, and tears.
It's the least we could do.
-
These guys stood in the rain for hours to honor my WWII veteran uncle Howard S. and I owe them a debt of gratitude. So I want them to have a nice case for the rifles and I am willing to do whatever it takes to see that happen.
-
I would be more.than happy to donate also. A thank you to the men who fired over my dad's grave.
-
these are nicer than the ones I have been watching on ebay. Those are more money and in most cases not lined. Looking at the website if you sign up for their newsletter you get a 5% discount.
-
There are a couple versions Rifle Length, Carbine Length, Lined, unlined. And available on lots of websites, I just picked that one because another was CheaperthanDirt and I knew I would get beat up over posting that.
-
I'll be happy to kick in to help support this.

$25 Same specs I think?
You want some help? I could try and track down some vendors if Moeller Arms, and American Reaper could not get them. PM me if you need anything.
-
I'll chip in, like Dan, these guys stood in the rain for my brother. They deserve the best.
-
in for some financial support!
does anyone know of other VFW's that might need help with something similar?
-
Metal zippers, definitely the way to go. I would be willing to contribute as well.
-
I would love to contribute for this. Please let me know when you have a plan on how I can do that.
-
I'd like to help out as well.
-
Ok, here's the tentative plan. We are going to set up a donation drive and I will order the cases.
Anyone wanting to donate please PM me and I will give you the address to send a check to, your I can meet up most anywhere in Lincoln.
Also, Rod has stated he would accept donations at the shop in LaVista.
Preliminary findings look like $30ish apiece before shipping, but what ever you can help with would be appreciated.
tstuart34- if you have the time and can do some searching and find the best deal (cost and shipping) that would be great. Just get back to me so I can get it rolling. I'm looking at the Carbine Length with the lining.
THANK YOU ALL for stepping up and helping those that stood for us.
-
Thank you for getting this put together. Are you sure the guns are carbines and not M1 Garands?
-
He told me they were the .30 Carbines, but I think I will go take a visit before I place the order, just to be certain.

Would it hurt to get rifle-length in case they may do double-duty? (I don't know what they've got---do they ONLY use carbines, or both?)
This is a great cause, folks, and it is really cool to see so many people wanting to help out.
-
I'll probably stop by see Rod this weekend, so will give him or Theresa the money.

if you are ordering these online, i always google the store name with coupon code or discount code. you never know what codes are out there and i am usually successful. just don't click on any strange sites.

So the cheapest that I could find on the net is the Link above. They offer a 10% discount on orders over $50. It basically wipes out the shipping. I sent them a e-mail and did not get a response so I gave them a call. I didn't get much of a response from the guy that answered the phone but he said that I would need to talk with the owner of the company but he is currently at SHOT or some other trade show. He said he should be back next week and to try back again. I will call back Monday or Tuesday and see if they can help out anymore.

Guys, I would love to do that, but as of yesterday all the cost AND shipping has been covered! I never thought we would do this in such short time.
Thanx to DanW, JeepGuy, Metaldoc, Gonzo, bkent, on my end, and Rod had a few checks come into to him Names???
I thank all of you for helping with this cause. I think we could/ should definitely do this on a yearly basis.
Once all the donations have been deposited, I will be placing an order.
How about I try and set it up to donate these to the guys on Feb 18th while everyone is in town? That would be a great thing for the afternoon!

Are you going to continue to collect donations to help with of there other expenses or could we find another VFW to help? I haven't had a chance to get ahold of you to give you my donation...
-
I think we will earmark any "surplus" donations for future projects like this.
I think we will make this a regular thing, but maybe coincide it closer to Veteran's day or something along those lines.
I called Larry and he was pretty impressed (but hurried as they were currently at the cemetery awaiting a soldier's Final Ride Home. )
I have made tentative plans for us to meet up with him and his crew after the NFOA DATC on Feb 18, after lunch time to present.
-
We will definitely be building upon this.
I just got the order placed.
Plans are, for now, to present these to the group after lunch on the 18th of Feb. (after the NFOA day at the Capital)
-
WHOA Almost Forgot! Cases came in last week. I was still 80% asleep when UPS dropped them off. I finally thought to open just the other day. These are pretty awesome!
Plans are in place to present these after our stint at the Capital on the 18th. I would appreciate anyone that wants to be present to do so.
-
i am 99% percent sure i will have a video camera for the day.
i will chip in that day, if i have cash
-
Where do I send my money to donate?

I just got off the phone with Larry from the VFW.
We will be meeting his crew at Antelope Park at the Veteran's Memorial for a presentation (and photo Ops) at 2pm Tuesday Feb 18th
If you are going to the Day at the Capital, please plan on hanging around after lunch to help present these heroes this gesture of our gratitude.
-
Ok, the deal is finally settled.
(we did the presentation after the Day at the Capital, but alas, they were not running Carbines as i was told, so I got them sent back and traded for the Rifle length Garand cases (Thank you to armynavysales.com for their handling of the situation (straight swap of cases- UPS shipping back was handled by Moonlight Auto Repair- Thanx)
My son and I just got back from delivering the new cases this afternoon. Now all is right with the world.
I want to thank everyone who donated again, and for those that wanted to, I will say I believe this is a cause we can make a regular deal of.
Larry wanted to be sure I let everyone know how much they appreciate what we did for them.
-
Thanks for the leg work in handling this. Glad to participate.
-
P.S. The shortest fella (Sorry WAY too many names that day for this ol brain) in the first picture sits on the Board that directs the goings ons at the Antelope Park Veterans Memorial Garden (Where we met up for the presentation) Afterward, he gave nnylrac and I a personal tour of the Garden. I can tell ya, if you have never been, you MUST make it a stop when in Lincoln. (I never knew all that was there.)
-
Great job.
Outreach projects like this are a great way to get the NFOA out there and increase visibility.
