Cabelas is having a big gun sale for a few days and they have Mosin-Nagant's for $89 that comes with a bayonet and accessories. im thinking about getting one, so i was wondering what should i look out for? any tips are welcome.
-
I did a fair amount of reading at http://7.62x54r.net/ (http://7.62x54r.net/) before I bought one last time they had them on sale.
-
Mainly matching numbers between the barrel, bolt, and mag floor plate, and good rifling without the crown being counterbored. Beyond that you can start looking for specific arsenals - Tula is typically considered more desirable than Ishvesk since there were fewer made.
-
Yes great site for info. Mostly just check to see if the bore/ rifling is 'washed out' otherwise these old things just plain shoot.
-
wow! thanks for the great info. looks like i gotta do some light reading. now i just gotta convince the wife.
and i just gotta remember to bring my bore sight along with my credit card. ;D
-
Or.......... >:D >:D >:D >:D >:D
Just get a C&R license and you can get them shipped right to your door.

$89 you say? I might have to go get a few.
-
Is the sale going on right now? When does it end?
-
Every now and then, I've seen a surprise Mosin at Cabela's too. They had a New England Westinghouse one a while back (I did not buy it, it was gone when I went to look for it again) and they had a Finnish M39, which I did buy. According to the flyer I got in the mail, the sale ends January 30, to answer the last question.
-
Just picked up a pair. They are 91/30s from the late 30s/early 40s in fantastic condition with all matching numbers.
-
yes lasts til the 30.
i might pick one up.
-
oh... and i forgot to mention this: please leave me at least one good one. ;D
i won't be at cabelas until saturday after 2pm.
-
Or you could get an M-39 here:

Nebraska Gun has a couple M-39's too. I have a 91/30 and an M-39 and there's no comparison. The M-39 is to the 91/30 like a Ferrari is to a Yugo.
91/30's are fun though. I need to get another.
-
sold out.
-
That didnt take long. At $89 it doesnt surprise me. Usually its $99 at Cabelas. I found a 91/59 out ther 2 years ago for $125and jumped on that.
-
Sad day, nearly had her convinced to let me buy one.
-
Man, this is what I get for not checking these forums more regularly. Missed out on a fun deal.
-
For what it's worth, Jeff at Nebraska Gun usually has Mosins for I think around $100. If you live in Lincoln you're breaking even with the Cabela's deal by the time you factor in gas money. With my gas guzzler I'm WAY ahead :D
WildGoose and I are working on a vintage bolt action rifle match to be held at the Ike's range, probably starting in April or so. I'll post more details when we have everything finalized, but if you needed an excuse to buy a Mosin here it is. It's not intended to be super competitive, just an excuse to get these old warhorses out of the safe and make some noise. You can spend $100 on the rifle, another $100 or so on some surplus ammo, and you're all set for a whole season of competition. I can't think of a cheaper way to get into match shooting.
-
Hey, count me in on that shoot, A friend and I were talking about the very same idea just last night. These old girls ain't doing no good sitting in the safe. Lord knows they are sure not sitting there lookin pretty. ;)

ya, my truck is a gas guzzler too, but at cabelas i get 5% cash back. only 1% at NE Gun.

Or you could get your C&R and have them delivered right to your door.....

Tell me about it! My credit card barely gets a chance to cool off!----Mike.

Well, I've decided to sporterize one of these nagants. Anyone know of a gunsmith in the Omaha are that would install the ATI bolt handle and scope mount?
-
I talked to cabelas and they put me on a wait list for one of these. May take forever. But givent he the costs to scope one, for a bit more I can get a modern .223 with scope so not sure if its worth it or not.
-
I think for the cost you'll be better off finding a used Savage or Stevens instead of scoping one of these. They're neat rifles but they can't compete with a modern gun.
-
Is it just me, but doesnt it seem pointless to have a high powered rifle like this without a scope?
-
If you want to scope one, I have used the scout scope setup. The mount replaced the rear sight and scope has up to 10" of eye relief, also no need to bend or install bent bolt. I liked it better as with this set-up the scope sight picture is quick to aquire and there is no chance of getting 'scoped' during recoil.
I installed a ATI monte carlo stock, scope and mount for $115 shipped thru ebay, on a M38. It was a blast. And can be returned to factory stock without modifications) ( had bit of an issue with the mount being sloppy, but could have been fixed with shims, but I sold the gun back to original owner, the part are to go onto the 91/30, but look to be 'illegal' for the Vintage shoot, ;( )

Ive seen that option, looks horrible, no offense.
That brins the gun cost up to $215 or so, cant a .223 scoped be had for 350 or so?

It's a Mosin! >:D not a beauty queen! :angel1:
I would like to see a $250 scoped .223 put holes thru(not just hit) a silhouette at 300+yards all day long, well until the shoulder gives out. And belch this much fire and smoke and noise after living in a hole for the last 50+ years. The coolness/ bada$$ factor is worth the time and money. IMHO 8)

Tried that method, but it was shooting too far left for the scope adjustment (might have been able to fix with shims) and couldn't keep it from coming loose on the vertical axis. I've already got a lot of money sunk into the camo ATI stock, which makes it difficult to use the iron sights with hearing protection on, so I need to do the bend the bolt handle and drill and tap scope mount route.

Just call your nearest Cabela's store when they go on sale. They will hold one for you for 5 days. Granted, the quality of the rifles have gone done the last two sales.
-
got put on a list. Finally got one. Picked up some high priced sp ammo to test it. Darn accurate.
Going to order some cheap russian stuff now.
