Sounds like we need to schedule a build party

I guess I better start collecting the LPK, stock, tube, buffer, etc., etc., etc.  I've got a lot more $$$ to spend to get to the final rifle.  I'm thinking something tacticool...adjustable stock, chrome lined 16" middy barrel, free float hand guard, flip up front and rear sights in .223/5.56.

I am considering a piston gun too, but that may be too pricey.

i like the build party idea.  i could use your guy's knowledge (and tools)   :)

im gonna get a PSA 14" barrel w/ pinned flash hider and MOE stock, grip and hand guard in OD Green or Coyote.  but i have some time before i can afford that.

If you   guys can get together the parts to build the lowers, we could do that in an afternoon easy. Uppers take a little more work and several special tools that I don't own

I have the tools to build an upper if you want to borrow them.

i think ill buy a complete upper, but that might change.  i won't buy my MOE LPK until early july as i will be busy and out of town a lot.

This be a good idea, but i plan on buying a complete upper and lower, totalling just under 700.  If nothing else i'll be by to learn, gunsmithing is something that is always good to learn.  (i started on a marlin .35, pulled it out of the stock and things went everywhere lol, i spent 2 hours finding all the springs...)

I think a separate thread should be started for a "build party".

I think that is why Dan made this thread, so we can settle on a time/place for the meeting.

Speaking of which...whats the plan?

I grabbed 2 PSA lowers and 2 LPK's awhile back.  Only put one together.  So I'm interested.

Crap, at $50/each, I may grab a couple more lowers just to have.

When everyone gets their parts in hand, we can try to schedule something. It will have to be after Independence Day

Here is a little trick I like to use when I build an AR15 lower.

If you are familiar with the little spring and detent that holds the rear take down pin in place, you know that the spring is a pain in the rump when trying to install the extension tube.

To remedy this, I use a piece of  lead shot (6 shot IIRC) as a small plug to retain the spring and detent in the lower. The same thing can be done by threading the hole and inserting an allen plug, but that takes more work. In both cases the spring needs to have a few coils cut off before it is installed.

I do not use loctite on the extension tube threads, because I like to change stocks once in a while, or install a sling plate. So I like to secure the extension tube by staking the nut after it is properly tightened.

In any case , not having a detent spring hanging out the back of the lower while doing this work is a much easier way to proceed.  8)

everyone, i like the idea of doing this after July 4.  i won't buy or have my LPK until after the holiday anyways.  i would say about the second full week would be best.  i work Sunday through Wednesday nights from 245pm to 1245am.  so im free Thursday through Saturday.

it's going to be the end of July before i am able to do anything anyway as well.

i just put an order in for an MOE LPK.  so ill be ready as soon as my lowers show up and my LPK comes in.  right now PSA is really far behind, so it might be late July before i get anything for my build.

We need to think about a location to do this... I was thinking about my man cave, but it would only have room for maybe 4 people max before it was elbow to elbow. I could get out a few tables and do part in the basement family room next to the cave

how many people are going to be able to make it?

haha my plans for an AR got nixxed by the financial advisor.  He apparently thinks i need to save money...

So i'm looking harder at a CZ instead.  I guess i could show up and take pics, maybe build a DIY for the site.

gsd, you have to approach this the right way...start with a stripped lower and let the disease progress naturally
Title: Re: Re: Good Deals Thread/ AR15 Build party in Lincoln
Post by: bkoenig on July 06, 2011, 07:45:40 PM
Yep, both of my AR's I started with a stripped lower that I found at a good price, then bought everything one piece at a time until I had everything.  Took about 6 months for each of them.
Title: Re: Re: Good Deals Thread/ AR15 Build party in Lincoln
Post by: gsd on July 06, 2011, 11:40:24 PM
Unfortunately i am one of those guys that goes all out.  If i start with a stripped lower it will be only a short matter of time before a LPK shows up, and by short i mean probably within a week.

OK you addicts... I have some free time the weekend of July 30-31 if you want to have a build party at my place.

Space is limited so maybe 6 builders  max. I have a room with a vise and two benches, then I can setup some tables in another room for simpler procedures.

I have some specialty tools, but feel free to bring whatever you think may be helpful.

Not many rules here, but 2 are No smoking and no alcohol on the premises.

Let me know if this works, or if we think we need a different location.

One last thing, you gotta be a registered NFOA member to participate

hmmm... my bday is on the 29th, so the 30th prolly won't be the best since i might have a party at my place on the 30th and work the 31st.  crap, i may be doing this myself...  if my plans change, ill let everyone know, but that isn't the best weekend.  what about the second week of august?

Dan,
If the interest is there, count me in.  I don't have anything to build, but I do have a bunch of AR tools.  Action blocks, panther claw, gas tube pin punch, armorer's wrench, FAT wrench, various punches, etc.

I finished building my 3-gun AR before I moved... still haven't had a chance to shoot it yet.  Between unpacking, my second job, and tending to the "new and improved" honey-do list for the house, I've been too busy.

Any plans for another build party?

I know I want my own build tools eventually, but it's hard to swallow...it all adds up to ~$450 on my "buy stuff" spreadsheet.  Thats including the bench vice and torque wrench. Yea I know that is common man-stuff to have but my wife left all my tools and man stuff at my parent's place on Guam (our last duty station)...I was TDY and she did the "household goods" part of the move all by herself. >:D

One of these days I'll build that extra lower I have sitting in the safe.  It's condemned to be painted pink camo and saddled with a .22 upper for my daughter.  The bad thing is she likes my .22 SBR so much that I think it's going to cost me an extra $200 to build one for her.
