Title: anyone know who works on FN-FALs?
Post by: shooter on August 23, 2014, 04:17:31 PM
ok so who is the go to guy now for FAL work? I used to go to Fred Ragle, but he passed away a few years ago.

anyone know who knows about them,

mine wont eject the case even with the gas closed all the way.

Check the plug on the front of the gas cylinder.  It can be installed in two different positions if I remember right.  One of them shuts off the gas system for launching grenades.

If that doesn't work let me know and I will do some research.

ok. lapped in the bolt carrier to the receiver with a little valve grinding compound, it slides a lot better , the rifle will chamber and fire now, but will not throw the brass out, its not coming back far enough, the gas setting is on 7, that is almost all the gas going to work the action, ive bought 2 books on FAL,s  several tools, now I have a new piston and gas tube coming,
we will see how the new parts help,  should be here in a week,

According to the FAL manual I have, when the gas port is at 7, it is fully open and will cause short stroking.  Please see attached pages.

Hope this helps,

strange. my block is numbered backwards from that, but no matter, I have it so it completely covers the bleed off hole, so it is getting all the gas,

Right now im running US> GI> BALL ammo.

the piston seems to have some wobble in the gas tube, so I have them ordered,

Did you check for a chipped extractor??  That is slipping off the case??

Its really not a horribly complex system, I would think any competent gunsmith should be able to diagnose it.

The only person that comes to mind is Lonny with Runnin' Iron.

I don't know how much of an expert he is on FAL's but I do know he works on them.

extractor is fine, , when I pull the bolt back the fired brass ejects fine, if it was a bad extractor, it would still try and feed a new shell, this isn't going back far enough to grab a new round,

also, I slowly pulled the bolt back and the ejector comes thru the bolt exactly as it should,

ok, so new piston, new gas tube, new plug, and new spring on the piston. plus a new gas regulator nut,

will fire but wont eject the empty,

I cut 1 inch off a old dual recoil spring,

now it will eject, but wont fully chamber a round,

I got another spring, im gonna cut it down 1 turn at a time, and see what that does,

got it running, the whole thing was to strong a double recoil spring, talked to someone at Lincoln show, and started cutting 1 coil at a time off a spring, found the right place,
