Title: Good place to buy used lever guns in the Omaha area?
Post by: Redstone on August 26, 2018, 05:43:32 PM
I'm looking for an older Marlin 336 and am wondering where in Omaha has a good selection?

Went to Cabela's and they have some nice ones, but according to the guy behind the counter, they can't unlock them until sold, "company policy," he claimed, and "sold as is." That's crazy since then you can't inspect the bore or action. Deal breaker for me, so I left.

What other gun stores have a good selection? Or at least enough turn over that something might pop up?

Thank you.

I would suggest a call to a supervisor at Cabelas to verify policy.

Unlocked? You mean behind the glass in the library? They've open it for me, granted years ago.

I bought a Maadi ak there and it failed to chamber rounds, they gave me my money back. Also, several years ago.

Next time they say company policy, ask them to show you where it says that.

David, I emailed them to verify the policy. It's unbelievable.

Robert, they wouldn't remove the trigger locks on firearms on the racks. For a lever action, that means no way to open it up and see down the barrel, and no way to see how the action operates. I specifically asked that, since I could not inspect a firearm, what if it didn't function, could it be returned, he said, "as is."

They don't get a lot come thru, but I bought mine at Scheels.  At a good price, also, as I caught them sleeping and not knowing what they had.  It ended up being a 336 Texan, but for some reason or another, Marlin didn't roll stamp the "T" behind the model # for a year or two, so I ended up with a Texan for base model price.

Cabela's customer service response:

"Thank you for taking the time to notify us of your concerns.  My sincerest apologies for the recent experience you had at our retail location.  We require trigger locks on all firearms in our stores as a safety precaution for our customers and team members as part of our efforts to proudly advocate and model responsible firearms ownership.  This corporate decision stands."

I went to a pawn shop and got an awesome deal on a Glenfield 30A.

That's nuts.  Do they think someone plans to drop some ammo into a gun and shoot it, if they unlock it for inspection?  I'd submit some customer feedback and let them know exactly why they lost a sale.  If enough people complain, they'll take notice and change the policy.

I let them know I found something at a pawnshop, and apples to apples, it was about $125 less than what they had on the rack that I couldn't inspect. I can buy ammo at Walmart or Scheels, Cabela's won't see any more of my cash.

Ironically, I have a CCP and was carrying when I tried to look at their lever action rifles.

I never thought cabelas had decent pricing anyway.  Another funny one, I had a pawn shop in NW Lincoln a few years ago wouldn't show me a pistol in the glass case till I showed them a CHP  ???  I walked.  Idiots.  Lot's of places out there to spend your money without the garbage.

Lol, ok. Glenfields are the same as Marlins except stocks and the gold trigger. Glenfield model 60 .22s are also just like the Marlins, except the stock is embossed with squirrels.  The 30A had a deer on it. Almost like they're suggesting what to shoot with it... I haven't read anything bad about Glenfield quality, they have JM stamped microgroove barrels, etc.

This one is a 1973 had had a folding rear sight. The bluing is really good, especially on the barrel. Got it at EZ Pawn on 24th for a very fair price. Will shoot it this weekend and report back. Attempting to add pics.

NICE!
Love the Glenfields. Yep, They are simply a Marlin with cheaper wood.  got me two of the chipmunks/ squirrels 60s and a 70C. I've always wanted to add a big brother 30A to the family.
That's a nice specimen.  If'n you ever get tired of it, let me know. ;)
