Title: Black rifle question.
Post by: JimP on December 08, 2008, 09:39:33 AM
I carried an M-16 (both A1, and A2) while in the Army, so that I am familiar with the platform, but I am not a real fan of the .223/5.56 cartridge..... anybody here have an AR in something like 6.8 SPC?  Tell me about it, please...... Cost? Peformance?  Bullet selection/availability?

Do not own one but sure would like one.

The 6.8x43mm SPC was designed for the M16 rifle/M4 Carbine switch out the 5.56mm upper receiver and replace it with the 6.8x43mm SPC upper along with the bolt and a few more parts. The 6.8x43mm round weighs 115gr. and has a velocity of 2750 to 2850 fps.
It accomplishes this with a new type of powder. Bullet weight is in 85 gr. up to 115 gr. with 115gr being the standard.

The price for a AR-15 in 6.8SPC is slightly higher than a .223/5.56 one can be bought for $1000.00 to $1400.00.
Ammunition is about the same price as .223 but harder to locate and going for $22.00 to $25.00 per 20 rounds.

I'd also consider the 6.5 Grendel.  The 6.5 has the edge over the 6.8 in terms of long-range (300+ yards) accuracy.

The 6.8 is supposedly good on two-legged critters and deer-sized game.

6.8 mm ...... is that a .277 bullet?  And what bullet diameter is the Grendel?

The parent case is .30 Remington, shortened to fit the AR15 magazine.

 DIA: .277"

The 6.5 Grendel (6.5mm)/.26 Grendel bullet

I already have a .270 Win, so in the interest of keeping logistics simple........ 110gr bullets would work, No?
