Title: Lead Boooooooolit Guys, Only
Post by: SemperFiGuy on February 04, 2013, 11:52:06 PM
Lead Boooooolit Guys........

If you have time and the inclination, would you be kind enough to give some idea of the current retail market price of ingot lead and lineotype lead per pound around your favorite eastern Nebraska supply channels these days??

Thank you most kindly,

sfg

Around $2 a pound for linotype I believe.  I need to buy more.

Holy Cow...........

I'm gonna go weigh my linotype!!!!

[Brief Pause.......]

Just did.   31.4 pounds.  Interesting..........summa that linotype doesn't have any type on it.   Must be just blank spacers.

And I do see a very tiny sprinkling of wheel weights among it.   Speaking of which, if this price inflation keeps up, beware of teen-agers with a bucket, hand tools and a getaway car.   Lotsa folks will be driving w/wobbly unbalanced wheels.

Being a non-lead booolit guy, I'm guessing that my 120# of lead ingots are worth somewhat less/pound than the linotype.

They'll be re-opening those lead mines down there in Reynolds County, MO.

Thanks, bkoenig.

ebay seems to say between $1 and $2 a pound for lead:

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=lead%20ingots&_pppn=r1&_dcat=31823&LH_Complete=1 (http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=lead%20ingots&_pppn=r1&_dcat=31823&LH_Complete=1)

linotype fetches a bit more ($1.50-$3 a pound) possibly:

Midway and other places have it for quite a bit more of course.

I'm thinking of ordering some of this stuff:

http://www.rotometals.com/product-p/30_antimony_70_lead.htm (http://www.rotometals.com/product-p/30_antimony_70_lead.htm)

More expensive than Linotype but it's a lot harder so you don't need nearly as much.

I've looked at rotometals a fair bit in the past, but to get it 'priced right' (in my opinion), ya gotta order a ton or more.

I've been meaning to hit the local metal scrap places and see what they'd sell misc lead for... but haven't had a chance yet.
