Title: 2014 Annual Meeting
Post by: RLMoeller on May 29, 2014, 03:21:59 PM
As we make preparations for our annual member meeting August 23rd, I would like to know who would you like to see as a guest speaker?

Ben Sasse or Mas Ayoob.

I did have another member contact me and ask that we invite Ben Sasse to the meeting.   What do other members think?   I wanted to shy away from folks that were on the campaign trail, though I can see value too.

It's rather a double edged sword, we can either prove to them that we as a voting populace are standard normal individuals, or one person could ruin it for everyone by running off at the mouth. (Probably why I will be quiet if I attend)

Not that precedent means everything, but we did have Charlie Janssen speak last year while he was running for governor.

maybe we should invite politicians but have a speaker who isn't a politician.... just a thought.  i wonder how much it would take to get Colion Noir (who i really like), Larry Vickers, Chuck Norris or Ted Nugent to speak or show up.

Not sure about speaking fee, but when I tried to get her to Lincoln or the Womens Expo , it was prepurchase of X amount of books, travel expense, rental car, lodging, and I'm not certain if measure were included.  Was a bit too rich for our blood then and the pocketbook is a bit slimmer now. Just my $.02 of course.
But you did remind me, I'll make contact with Madison Rising's people again to see if they are booked that night. ;)

Dickey's BBQ will be catering again this year.   And we have the clubhouse, so no worries about weather.

Tickets are $12 and can be purchased here:

Did anyone mention Kirsten Joy Weiss?

"Starting later than the norm for most competition shooters, she began her Olympic-style rifle career in the latter part of her high school days, but made up for time swiftly. She won gold at the international cup at Bisley, Enlgand and received a collegiate rifle scholarship to the University of Nebraska Lincoln. From there she made the national development team, competed in the World Championships, made the Olympic short-list, won national titles, and the list continues   "

I will be camping at the Heartland Shooting Park the night before the meeting.  I will be at RV pad #9.  Look for a dark gray Dodge Ram 2500 and a pull-behind pop-up camper.

Members are welcome to join me for a cookout the night before the event.  Bring your own meat to grill and a side dish to share.

No lectures on sweeping the leg drills?  I mean, with mobility exploitation of the target, follow up evaluation becomes easier for ballistic tasking, doesn't it?

I was asked if I would do something for the kids again. Sure I says.

I'm looking to do something a little different this year since most of the kids were a bit older and fairly familiar with firearms.
So... this year I will set up a Rimfire Challenge -ish sort of match.   I want to give some options, too, so I hope to offer Cowboy- Lever gun, single action revolver, Tactical- AR style rifle and 'modern' .22 semiauto pistol , and standard- Ruger 10/22 and MarkII/III-preferably "race ready."  To give the kids a little taste of different competitions out there.

I'm putting this out there for help.  I may need a levergun (Henry would suffice (I have access to one, but would have to go get it in Kansas) , an AR style rifle - M&P 15-22/ Mossberg 715 (?), or even a full size AR with dedicated upper?. The Modern Tactical pistol I'm thinking - Walther P22, Ruger SR22, Mosquito, M&P .22, etc.
I have a 10/22 but it is far from race ready (plain jane bone stock) if any one has, or know someone that has some Ruger/ Volquartsen rifle and pistol please contact me.

Of course the kids are welcome to bring their own, but I'd like to have a selection for those that don't .
Of course Moms and Dads are welcome to shoot, too, once the kids have all shot.
I think I'll do this as a free will donation sort of thing to help offset cost of ammo. ;)

Depending on donations, there may be prizes in each category.

Just a quick reminder for tomorrow.

Registration is from 8:30 to 9:00 a.m

We are meeting at the clubhouse, which is across from the trap and skeet range

We will have a printout of lunch tickets sold, so you don't need to print anything off to bring with.

Just to let folks know---unless there is a significant amount of torrential rain (which there shouldn't be) or lightning, the Defensive Awareness seminar will be out on one of the pistol bays.

The clubhouse just isn't really set up for any type of large meeting, and we need some room to move around. You didn't think I'd just stand there and talk at you the whole time, did you?  :)

(And I know plenty of people who have CCW-ed there numerous times.)

Got the results from the Steel Challenge Fun Stage today, with a total of 25 guns shot on the stage.  (And we had quite a few more people than that at the meeting---what, you didn't think you should bring guns to an NFOA meeting?  :) )

Anyway, here are the results.  First list is by division type (Centerfire Pistol, .22 Rifle, or .22 Pistol) including all second gun attempts even though those don't count for bragging rights.  The second list takes me out plus eliminates all second attempts, and puts everyone together in order by final score.

A special congrats to junior Kaylee D. who borrowed my .22 rifle to shoot this, and got a rockin' third overall on that second list! (Dankert folks---you guys should come to the next Steel Challenge match at ENGC on October 19th---and if Kaylee brings .22 ammo, she is welcome to use my rifle again!)

Dang it, Sean outshot me with my own rifle.  [sigh]  I need to practice more.  Or make sure he has a jam on TWO of his runs, instead of just the first...

(https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5564/14991774516_b1e928936a_o.gif) (https://flic.kr/p/oQLLfY)

Good to see everyone at the meeting---and NEXT time, Chris doesn't get to set me up to look like an idiot by running an IDPA stage and pulling a miss in front of everyone!   :-[

Everyone should obviously sign up for Shawn's Tac Med class.  (Good stuff, huh?)  And I never was able to make it over to the Reaper Arms bay to shoot some of those guns, but I DO know that I've been slowly saving up money for an AR in .300 Blackout.  (Already have a silencer on the layaway plan....)  Gotta love that stuff.  Nice to shoot rifles without blowing out your ears!

Good to see/meet everyone out there today.

A quick question about the Steel Challenge setup in GI.
Was that Smoke and Hope that was set up there?
Just trying to compare to my past times.
Thanks Greg

It was a variant on Roundabout---but slightly more difficult.  (Targets a little farther back, rectangle definitely farther back, table start.) So, it won't match anything directly, but I'd say that it was about 0.6 to 0.8 seconds per string above my normal Roundabout times on average, if that helps.

I shoulda made the time to shoot the highly irregular outlaw SC stage Saturday, but NOOOOOO!  I was too busy helping with the IDPA demo and forgetting to tape all targets.  It was tough duty but still fun.

It was great meeting everyone. Thanks to all who had a role in planning and organizing the event. Sorry I wasnt able to be there for the morning events. It sounds like I missed some good stuff.

I came woefully unprepared bringing no business cards or pamphlets (didnt even bring a gun to participate in the shooting events  :'()

If anyone has any questions about the med gear I brought, Tac Med training or 88 Tactical in general I can be contacted through this forum or by email (swhittington@88tactical.com)

Thanks for presenting Shawn. Your talk was interesting, and hopefully opened up some eyes to how unprepared many of us are. I thought the group was paying the most attention during your talk.
I wish I had known you wanted to shoot, you could have tried my 22 on steel!!

Enjoyed your presentation immensely Shawn.  Great to have a chance to listen to the voice of experience.   Really though, working the night before and getting off at 7AM should have given you PLENTY of time to get prepared.  :)

Glad you didn't have to kick me in the ba**s for having my tourniquet in its shrink wrap.  Thanks for presenting.  I thought you did a great job with the amount of time allotted.
