i'm not lyin' because i bought a Mt. Lion permit. it was only $15. now i gotta find a place to hunt.
-
Hmmm.... not such a bad idea. A $15 donation to NE G&P that will infuriate the bed-wetters. 8)
-
well i also picked up my fur bearer's permit and habitat stamp for 2014.
i also bought it because the Cobra hates Mt. Lion hunting.

You might try 114th & Dodge in Omaha, where the creek crosses over. There was a Mountain Lion there, coupla years back. Caused a Big Hubbub at the time.
He's gone now, courtesy of NE Game & Parks, Nebraska Humane Society, LEOs, and whatever it took to shoot him and then pack him off to Henry Doorly Zoo.
But......that area appears to be good mountain lion habitat. At least, it appeared so to the mountain lion. It's a place to start. Plenty of parking at First National Bank.
Watch for right-turning traffic coming off Dodge. (Could be the Cobra.... Or the PETA van.......)

Darn, I was hoping you had bought a FoxPro so I could borrow it.

umm.. i own a FoxPro... its a Wildfire II w/ the fox jack or some other decoy. plus i have the Mojo decoy. i need to upgrade to a bigger caller. Im thinking the Fury 2.
my caller has roughly 80-ish calls on it. covers coyotes, rabbits, coons, crows, bobcats, Mt Lion, etc. i got a bunch free from a guy i met on arfcom. i'll post something there and see if i can get some tips or more calls.

I can't think of a better reason than that.

RobertH, if you are at the Gretna coffee Saturday morning, I'll share 'secret information' regarding sightings by citizens and NGP employees.... :-X

i work sat mornings... so PM inbound

Well I can tell you there is a mountain lion up around 8 miles south of Clearwater because I saw it. I believe it was a young one or a small female because it was only probably around 40 pounds.

They're definitely in that area. My dad has seen tracks.

I've heard that some of the bars in west Omaha are good if you are into that. I mean, cougars are the same as mountain lions, right?
-
Two shot already...
LINCOLN - Two mountain lions were harvested on Jan. 2 during Nebraska's first regulated hunting season. Both hunters harvested male mountain lions.
A male lion weighing 103 pounds was harvested in Sioux County and a male lion weighing 138 pounds was harvested in Dawes County.
The hunt took place in the Pine Ridge Unit of northwest Nebraska. Season 1 ended with the harvest of two lions. The state's inaugural season opened Jan. 1. Season 2 in the Pine Ridge Unit will open on Feb. 15.
For more information about mountain lions in Nebraska, visit the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission's mountain lion web page at www.OutdoorNebraska.org (http://www.OutdoorNebraska.org).

Husker... those cougars will kill you slowly by taking all of your money. Mt Lions will just outright kill you.
and im glad the first two permits got their tags filled. hopefully i can get mine filled some time this year. i've heard of a lot of "sightings", but ill have to try to follow up on these and see if i can get permission or hunt on some public land near those sightings.
-
Why aren't these 'Cougars'?
'Mountain Lion' seems particularly silly in Nebraska.
ETA- just read RobertH post. If those types of Cougar permits were for sale there would be lines like a jumbo lottery.
-
i contacted Sam @ the G&P, he told me they have sold 490 permits as of yesterday.

I hunted the Ponderosa WMA for several years. I had heard there were Pumas in the area and the occasional bear. As I'd be walking in the dark toward where I was going to deer hunt I'd be whispering to myself "Lions and tigers and bears, oh my".
A little closer to Omaha, I was deer hunting east of Ashland a few years ago and came across a large cat foot print. I put a .30-06 cartridge next to it and took a picture of it. The print was bigger than my cartridge.

hehehehe.... lets team up!

Got an email last week that there was a possible mountain lion sighting pretty close to Lakeland Estates which is about half way between Blair and Omaha, just off Highway 133.
-
Just got my tag. I have no idea where Im going to hunt, but I figured what the heck. Its good all year.
-
LB671 - Chamber's bill to eliminate Mountain Lion hunting has passed on to E&R initial. see the full member's section to see my letter to my Senator. we will also need to hit up the Gov for this. send your opposition letters now!
-
i posted this in the member's only section, but figured i should post it here as well...
and one more thought...
the NE G&P allows Bighorn Sheep hunting, but there are very few out there. hell, we've had to import them from Canada, but the season is closed since there are not enough large males to hunt. so, why can we open and close the season on Bighorns, but outright eliminate the Mt Lions season?
-
when i was deer hunting pine ridge I saw 4 big horn sheep, was pretty cool.
I'm not opposed to Mt Lion hunting, but what do you do with it after? mount it? what about the meat? Are you going to eat cat?
Did you guys hear the story about the Cali game and parks guy who went on a legal lion hunt in Wy (or some such state) and was fired from his job for legally harvesting a mt lion in a different state?
-
You can eat it. Makes ok jerky, too. I want to kill one if it comes on our land simply because it does not belong there. This area is no longer ideal habitat for them and a population of them would create problems that I don't want to have. The vast majority of confirmed sightings are because the animals presented a safety concern where they turned up and were dispatched. Nebraska used to have them as a nonprotected status meaning you could kill one if you saw it. That was until someone killed one, then they made them a game animal with no hunting season. Iowa still allows them to be killed, I believe.
-
NE G&P told me they have sold 1,022 Prairie Permits, thats on top of everything else. they have quite the revenue stream on this. i hope LB671 dies.
-
Mt Lion spotted near Wahoo. I have a permit. Anyone have connections to see if I can hunt some land around there?

I just read that, the sheriffs deputy spotted him after he was called in and possibly spotted a second one. This has to be false because I thought Ernie said those kind of numbers aren't in Nebraska.

Unicameral is out of session. I bet
Bert n Ernie would like to go with you. ;D
