Hello, I am thinking of purchasing a 1911, and while looking around find the choices a little overwelming.
I want a USA made weapon, I like Ruger and S&W, I also seem to buy stainless.
Any opinions, personal experiences welcomed. I would prefer a good shooter right out of the box, as opposed to having to have work done on a new gun.

Greg what you are looking for is at odds with each other
US made 1911's - start at about $700 for mil spec, usually handle ball ammo out of the box but if you are looking to handle HP's ect. (self defense ammo) they normally need some work done. Once you get into the more custom/semi custom (ei more money, $1500 and up) you will find some that can handle pretty much anything out of the box, but they are spotty and not every gun in a series will be the same.
Foreign 1911's - I personally like Rock Island Armory, they hit the lower price point and feed pretty much any ammo right out of the box. they have some models that have more bells an whistles than just their mil spec, but those are mostly personal choices. Problem is they don't have a stainless, though there is a distributer out there that sells them hard chromed. Also these are all steel guns so if weight is a factor...
With some time and patience you may be able to find a used stainless 1911 around the $1000 point that has already had a fluff and buff ect. done, but unfortunately there are some many guy's out there that think that because they have a dremmel tool the can play armorer that if you don't know allot about the gun you need to be careful.

Taurus has a stainless 1911 model for around 800ish.

Good luck staying under a grand for a good, new 1911. Maybe if you find a sale somewhere. Prices have gone up since I bought my Kimber Eclipse II Target for about $1100. I love it. Adjustable sights (which needed no adjustment from the factory), night sights, slim, accurate, and the stopping power to make it a good self-defense gun.
I don't have many places around Lincoln to shop for firearms anymore. I won't even look at Scheel's since the encased all the handguns in expanded metal cases so you can't even get a good look at anything. They say, "Can I show you something?" I say, "Yes, take this f'ing crap off the glass so I can see what's in there, and I may want to take a closer look."

Thanks guys, I read a gun mag review of the new Ruger SR1911.
Has anyone shot this piece? Priced at 799.00 Mfr. req. price.

I have a Ruger and it is a good 1911 for the money. It is not as nice as my Dan Wesson Valor but it costs about 1/3 as much. The Ruger is accurate and so far accepts my reloads without any failures. It doesn't like my Chip McCormick mags for some reason but that is the only problem I have had with it. If you want to stay under $1000 and don't mind the wait I would say that is the way to go.

Greg 58 - Cabela's in La Vista has (or use to have) your Ruger 1911 if you wanted to check it out. Noticed it the other day. Doubt if the Bullet Hole has one to rent for a test drive.
Armed and Humorous - you'r to funny about the comment on Sheels. And your right. The cage annoys me too.

I suppose Scheel's wanted to improve security of their handguns after that big theft of a couple years ago, or their insurance company "suggested" the expanded metal cages for their display cabinets. I hesitate to call them display cabinets 'cause you can't see sqaut though the mesh. I used to go there about every week just to look at all the guns, see what was new, or find good sales. I won't even bother going into the handgun section now, and I wrote and told them (never heard back).
The really weird part is that they are breaking the law (in Lincoln anyway) by not having all their guns and ammuntion locked up so that customers can't get access to them without someone from the store helping them. Yet, they only lock up the handguns and handgun ammuntion. I guess if you want to steal a gun to kill someone, you'll have to use a shotgun or rifle.

Greg 58 - was at Cabela's in La Vista today Sat 1-7, remembered you were looking the the Ruger 1911's so checked it out for ya. They had the Ruger 1911 in the used case for $740, also had one at the gun counter for $699 for the same gun. Don't know why the used one was more. More mags?

Greg58 better get yourself to Cabelas. I think you would be happy with the Ruger. I can't think of anything bad to say about mine. I have just over 600 rounds through mine without a hitch. I put about 50 factory 230gr FMJ through it first then started on various reloads. The factory sights are dead on and it is fun to shoot.

A&H - I think at Scheels the trigger locks on the long guns satisfies their legal requirements. I seem to recall hearing the cabinets for handguns was done because their insurance company demanded it.
The Dan Wesson 1911's have an excellent reputation. Here are a couple on Gunbroker for less than $1000.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think Scheel's (or any other retailer) should have to lock this stuff up during the day when they have sales people around (the store is locked at night). Still, I've always wondered why Lincoln bothered to create such an ordinance and so obviously fails to enforce it. It's not like trying to catch everyone speeding, running red lights, driving drunk, robbing people, or other crimes where the perpetrator can get away before the cops arrive. If the point is to keep guns and ammo from being shoplifted, a trigger lock wouldn't stop that (and presumably could be removed once the getaway is complete). The ammo is just as accessible to shoplifting as anything else in the store (rifle and shotgun ammo). Most likely you are right about the insurance company and the mesh over the hand gun cabinets.

I have seen the Dan Wesson, one says CZ does that mean it is made overseas?
I will have to get over to Cabelas, that is funny the used one is more than the new price.

I think the CZ is made over seas. CZ markets the Dan Wesson, which is made in New York. They are different guns.

The CZ is made in Uhersky Brod, Czech Republic. btw, i'm looking at getting a CZ 97b, the Bullet Hole has the 97b for $880. Way to expensive.
