My father-in-law passed away several years ago and my mother-in-law had too move out of her house. Today I was helping the family clean out the house. We were in the basement and I spotted what looked like the muzzle of a pistol. I pulled it out and holy shnikes, I found a Mayser Broom Handle in very good condition.
It was like winning a treasure hunt. Very cool!

I don't have the gun. I didn't notice anything on the grip, but I will ask my brother-in-law.
ETA: I have done some research and I now know what you mean by the ride nine on the grip. That large "9" was definitely not on the grip. Though, as you said, that doesn't mean they were not changed. My initial guess is that the pistol is a post-war bolo version, but I'm still researching. One disappointing discovery is that the serial number on the barrel and the lower do not match. However, the three places I have found the serial number on the lower are all the same.
So probably not a high dollar C96, but cool nonetheless.

Hmmm...first problem is finding a holster and stripper clip pouches, then I need to practice my stripper clip reloads.

I hope your brother in law is better than mine...
I'd need a broom handle to club him with.

I'm not sure what he will end up doing with the pistol. He will take care of it if he keeps it, but not sure if he feels the need to get funds for my mother-in-law's care.
